The Single Ring: Single & The Power of Buying Your Own Ring

Living Single

R-1263For single people, the single ring has become a growing trend, especially with women. The trend makes sense when you consider the fact that “in 1950, married couples represented 78 percent of households in the United States. In 2011, the US Census Bureau reported, that percentage had dropped to 48 percent,” according to Christian Science Monitor. CSM also stated that, “in 2014 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, 50.2% of the population were single, compared with 37.4% of the population in 1976.” In today’s world of social media and connecting through apps and websites, people are enjoying the single life more, shifting marriage and even relationships for “later in life,” while taking the opportunity to travel or focus on a career. Christian Science Monitor even states that in 1960 the average age of marriage was 20 for women and 22 for men. In recent years the age has crept up to 27 for women and 29 for men.

The 21st Century

R-1077-1The need to marry a man out of necessity and/or to raise a family has changed significantly from the 1950s and 1960s to the 21st century. Society (at least in America) has become more and more comfortable with single women. This could be a result of culture changing moments like in Sex and the City. In the first movie released in 2008, Samantha eyed a diamond ring at an auction. She wanted to treat herself to the statement piece but as it turns out her then-boyfriend bought it for her. She was happy she got it but preferred to buy it for herself. The moment resonates with a lot of non-married (or even non-engaged) women. Just because you’re not engaged or in a relationship doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat yourself to a beautiful and timeless single ring.

Confidence & Independence

At Westwood Jewelers, we believe you have the power to buy yourself whatever ring you want. A single ring is a statement of confidence, and for some women, even independence. A single ring is telling the world you’re in love with yourself. As Carrie Bradshaw famously says in the last few lines of the Sex and the City series “The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you find someone to love the you, you love, well that’s just fabulous.”

Something we all need a little more of. Of course…it also doesn’t hurt to have something shiny to look at on your hand.
