At 44.8 degrees Celsius,Delhi’s temperature may not have broken any major records, but the heat wave conditions did hamper normal life in the city on Sunday. There was no cloud cover,no wind and the temperature was five degrees above normal. The 60 per cent humidity made for a sweaty day, keeping people off the streets. And there seems to be no relief in sight as the monsoon is taking its time to reach the city.

“A temporary weakening of the monsoon current is likely during the week and no major advance of southwest monsoon would occur over eastern and central India during the next one week,” said the latest report of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD). The monsoon is expected to pick up force due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal around June 25 and start moving towards Delhi and its neighbouring states. The normal date of monsoon in Delhi is June 29.

According to a Met official, such breaks are normal and happen every year. “Monsoon does not flow at the same pace at all times. There are moments when a slight change in weather slows it down. However, this coming week, rainfall activity will remain very active in the west coast and northeastern states,” he said.

“Temperatures could go up to 46 degrees as there are no cooling winds expected,” said the Officer on Duty at the Safdarjung Met Department. There, however, could be a sandstorm on Monday.

On Sunday, the temperature crossed the maximum temperature recorded in Delhi in June 2008 and 2009. While in 2009,the highest temperature recorded was 43.9 degrees Celsius,in 2008 it was only 38.7 degrees Celsius. The highest ever temperature recorded in Delhi was 46.7 in 1945.

Festive offer

The minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 29.2 degrees, one degree above normal. It is expected to rise to 30 degrees on Monday morning.
