By Jonathan Stevenson

2240: Thanks for your company tonight. It's not every day you get to witness a little slice of footballing history, is it? Join the brilliant Sammy Lyon for the League Two play-off final on Saturday, and I'll see you on Sunday. Oh yes, Sunday. It gets no bigger. Ciao for now.

2236: I hope you enjoyed that. I did. Shakhtar fully deserved that victory, and it continues the resurgence of eastern European football. Question is, how long before one of these teams makes their mark on the Champions League?

From Ed, in Bath, via text on 81111: "I'm revising for my macroeconomics exam on Friday in the Bath Uni library and I refuse to restart revising until this is read out. I also want to mention that it's been a brilliant day as my sister gave birth to a baby girl earlier on. That, and Uefa action - perfect."

2229: Ronaldo Naldo is inconsolable, crying a river of misery out there on the pitch, his emotions laid bare for the world to see. Shakhtar, meanwhile, are going to party like it's 1991 tonight.

2227: Shakhtar Donetsk captain Darijo Srna is the last man up, and he collects the Uefa Cup trophy from Uefa president Michel Platini's face before holding it aloft in Istanbul. Wonderful scenes, and there's even ticker tape. It's like 1978 all over again.

2225: History, right before your eyes. Shakhtar become the first Ukraine side to win a European competition and they will forever be the last winners of the Uefa Cup. They are in Michel Platini's face, collecting their winners' medals, as this magically appears on your screen.

2223: Poor Werder go up and get their losers' medals. Meanwhile, Macca's worried, as well he might be: "Hopefully Shakhtar skipper Darijo Srna has saved some energy for the presentation, as the Uefa Cup is the heaviest of all the Uefa trophies at a mighty 15kg."

From Regan, Bristol, via text on 81111: "This auto refresh really is glorious. It just keeps going without you asking it to, it's like the Tevez of live text. Beats that old model where you would keep pressing for results to have just that moment of brilliance followed by minutes of nothing. Or the Berbatov, as it should be known."

From Eagleeeee! on 606: "Worthy winners of the last ever Uefa Cup final I guess. Great footballing side, good in defence and stylish going forward. Had a bit of luck go their way but so did Bremen. However, if Diego had been on the pitch... if only, it could have been a happy night for Bremen."

2216: Match-winning hero Rodrigues Jadson picks up his son from the crowd, takes him on to the pitch and screams some Portuguese words into the camera. Jubilation.

SHAKHTAR DONETSK HAVE WON THE UEFA CUP

2214: Full-time Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Werder Bremen
Shakhtar Donetsk have won the last ever Uefa Cup and few could argue that they were not the better of the two teams tonight. It is a victory that the whole of Ukraine will celebrate tonight - the country's first European success since independence in 1991.

2211: Heartbreak for Werder. The ball is in the Shakhtar net after Sebastian Prodl heads goalwards from a long punt into the box, but Claudio Pizarro fouled Dmytro Chygrynskiy and referee Luis Medina Cantalejo gets his last major decision in a major international match spot on. Two minutes of stoppages have begun.

2208: Three minutes remain. Shakhtar lead 2-1, and time is running out for the Germans and their manager Thomas Schaaf.

2206: Alexandros Tziolis is the latest in the book for a pretty reckless challenge on Razvan Rat, who leaps about 20 feet in the air, as if to make his point.

2205: Werder win a corner, but it comes to nothing. Shakhtar have six minutes plus stoppages to hang on and become Uefa Cup winners.

From BBC Sport's James Doe in Istanbul: "I don't think anyone here wanted extra-time. It's getting on for 0005 here, there's a chill in the air and factors of both seem to be sending the more casual fans to the exits and ferries - if there are still any running!"

2202: Whoosh that was close. Alexandros Tziolis, the Greek substitute, lashes in a right-footer from 22 yards that skips a few inches wide of Andriy Pyatov's left-hand post. Shakhtar take on Rodrigues Jadson and bring on Igor Duljaj, who looks like a cross between Attilio Lombardo and Jonny Metgod, according to my colleagues. Probably tells you one thing about him, anyway.

2201: Rodrigues Jadson, who may have just written his name in Uefa Cup folklore, is stretchered off, but he's soon back on after a bit of treatment. Anyone would think he was trying to eat up a few seconds.

From archtomathy on 606: "The Bremen manager clearly hasn't been playing enough Football Manager, or he would have known how much of a threat Srna can be down the right. Massive scouting fail."
Join the debate on 606

2157: Luis Medina Cantalejo, who waits for no man, gets us back under way. There are 15 minutes left for Werder to save their night.

2156: Half-time in extra-time Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Werder Bremen

2155: Willian is played narrowly onside and from 35 yards he sees Tim Wiese stray off his line, but the Brazilian's lob hits the top of the German keeper's net. Ooooh.

2152: Werder Bremen make their third and last change of the night, with Peter Niemeyer going off and Alexandros Tziolis coming on in his place.

Text in your views on 81111
From Mike, Wigan, via text on 81111: "Even though I'm watching the match on TV I'm very tempted to turn it off if it goes to pens and watch the auto refresh instead."

2149: Shakhtar bring on Olexiy Gai for Ilsinho.

2148: Perpetrator of goalkeeping howler number one makes amends, Andriy Pyatov getting down well at his near post to save a fierce Claudio Pizarro volley. From the corner, Pizarro heads tamely into the arms of the keeper.

Goooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal
2146: GOAL: Goalkeeping howler number two, but it's at the opposite end. Darijo Srna for the umpteenth time gets down the right and sends over a cross to about the penalty spot, where Rodrigues Jadson turns the ball goalwards - Tim Wiese should save it, he really should, but it slips between his gloves and bobbles into the corner.
Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Werder Bremen

2145: Werder bring on Petri Pasanen for Clemens Fritz. Oh, and in answer to the comment two posts down - no. That would ruin auto refresh for all of us. Trust me.

2143: Darijo Srna's shot bounces awkwardly just in front of Tim Wiese and the keeper takes no chances, patting the ball away from danger instead of trying to catch it.

Get involved on 606
From BRRAT(BerbaRonRooAndrTev) on 606: "Stevo... Can you put your picture along with the auto-refresh? Now, THAT would be something new."
Join the debate on 606

2140: Extra-time is under way in the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. Who wants this most?

2138: Macca's full of chat. Auto refresh was made for his chat: "German sides have been involved in two penalty shoot-outs that have decided the Uefa Cup final. You'll no doubt be shocked to hear that they have won them both. Bayer Leverkusen beat Espanyol in 1988 and Schalke did likewise to Inter in 1997."

2135: Full-time Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Werder Bremen
So extra-time it is, and the prospect of penalties to boot in the last Uefa Cup final. Shakhtar have edged it, but they're not easy to beat are they, these Germans?

2132: Werder have the ball in the net, but it's rightly adjudged to have been offside. We're into the three minutes of added time now.

2131: Shakhtar bring on a man named Olexandr Gladkiy, for Luiz Adriano.

Yellow card
2128: Ilsinho is the next man in Luis Medina Cantalejo's book for a very weary-looking tug back on Werder's Sebastian Boenisch.

2128: This has got a 'let's-save-some-energy-for-extra-time' kind of feel to it now. Penalties, on auto refresh - can you imagine that? My word, the excitement it'll cause.

2125: Seven minutes remaining plus stoppages. It remains 1-1, and we're on course for extra-time and penalties.

Yellow card
2123: Werder's suspended Brazilian playmaker Diego is all smiles sat in the stands in Istanbul, he seems to be making some sort of phone call. If only he'd text 81111... Meanwhile, back on the pitch and Clemens Fritz is booked for Werder.

2121: Shakhtar are still doing most of the pressing - we've got 10 minutes of normal time left in the last Uefa Cup final. It's enough to bring a tear to your eye, isn't it?

Yellow card
2119: Shakhtar's Mariusz Lewandowski is booked for a shirt pull on the halfway line. Meanwhile, Werder bring on Aaron Hunt, and seconds later, Claudio Pizarro's header is pushed away off his line by Andriy Pyatov.

2117: Shakhtar go all Manchester United on us, a corner played straight to Rodrigues Jadson, who volleys at Tim Wiese from 15 yards. Didn't quite catch it, the Brazilian schemer.

BBC Sport's James Doe in Istanbul: "Having wanted to see their own team here tonight, several pockets of Man City fans rise up around the East Stand during a lull in play for a chorus of 'Blue Moon'. Fair play to them."

2114: That Ronaldo Naldo, he seems to be the man standing between Shakhtar and victory at the moment. He's a unit from the same school as Christopher Samba and Papa Bouba Diop, too - you won't get through him in a hurry. "He's like a mini-wardrobe," adds Macca.

Get involved on 606
From everythingbutthegoal on 606: "This Shakhtar team is very good - though you can't help but think that it will be torn apart in the summer transfer window. Who would you take in your team?"
Join the debate on 606

2110: This is an outrageous thing for me to say, but it's hard not to want Shakhtar to score - they are playing some gorgeous stuff again, their passing - both short- and long-range - has been almost flawless. Just over halfway through the second half.

2107: Luiz Adriano turns really well inside the Werder box and hammer a left-foot shot goalwards, but Ronaldo Naldo gets in a timely block - top-drawer defending.

2106: Shakhtar fail to clear a corner and Mesut Ozil lashes wide with his left foot from 12 yards.

Text in your views on 81111
From The Woltinator, Radley, via text on 81111: "You know there's a professional footballer playing for Halesowen Town called Jonathan Stevenson as well? Thought you might like to know that during this entertaining final. Also, Werder Bremen defo missing Diego."

2102: The camera pans to the stands, where Uefa president Michel Platini is sat all on his lonesome. Must've been something he said...

2100: Claudio Pizarro does well down the Werder right and his cross falls for Markus Rosenberg, who turns neatly before shooting left-footed, Olexandr Kucher making the crucial block.

Yellow card
2058: Darijo Srna is getting into some dangerous positions down the Shakhtar right and after some great trickery from Ilsinho he whips over a cross that just evades Luiz Adriano. Srna is booked after for some back-chat.

2055: Rodrigues Jadson mis-controls the ball and it falls for Luis Fernandinho to drag a shot wide from 30 yards. Remember that 40-yard screamer he scored in the Champions League before Christmas? Had there not been a net, that ball would still be rising. What a hit. This wasn't.

2054: Rodrigues Jadson goes close for Shakhtar, his curling, arching 25-yard free-kick from a bit to the left of the Werder box forcing a decent save from Tim Wiese.

BBC Sport's James Doe in Istanbul: "With the Werder fans' cover version of 'Football's coming home' still going round my head from half-time, the second half starts. The consensus here is that it's still most definitely anybody's game!"

2051: Shakhtar are most pleasing on the eye at times, they move the ball crisply and get into some very good positions. They're like a poor man's Barcelona - but not that poor, on this evidence. They've started this half better, too.

From Tom, revising (ha) in Notts, via text on 81111: "Am I the only one still pressing F5 in the vain hope that something new will come up, even though I know it's autorefreshing?"

2049: Nice try - as Willian danced down the Shakhtar left Razvan Rat took Clemens Fritz out with a blatant bodycheck. Referee Luis Medina Cantalejo was not fooled.

2047: Very prompt. There aren't any changes, and we're back under way in Istanbul.

From redandblackT1899™-Leggo my Carlo on 606: "Shakthar are playing some lovely stuff and running rings round the Bremen defence. They should win this easily purely based on the play so far!"
Join the debate on 606

2043: Shakhtar are in great form, having won 23 of their last 27 games in all competitions, including 10 out of their last 11. Werder, on the other hand, lost 3-1 at home to the Bundesliga's bottom side Karlsruhe on Saturday. Only one winner, then...

2039: That Macca. Innovative, isn't he? Must be something in the water around here... "In the absence of a Uefa Cup final Player Rater, we've read the mind of all of you who would have almost certainly had a little play. The half-time leader is Willian on a virtually brilliant 8.27, while you have given poor old Andriy Pyatov a torrid time on 3.47. If you're missing somewhere to punch in some numbers, why not head over to the Premier League predictor and decide who will be relegated on Sunday?

From Bitter Josh, via text on 81111: "One of this ref's highlights was also calling a free-kick a penalty when Wayne Rooney fouled a Russian, which helped us get knocked out of qualifying."

Half-time
2032: Half-time Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Werder Bremen
That was a really good half of football, great to see both teams doing their best to go for it too - let's hope Manchester United and Barcelona follow their lead seven days from now.

2031: Shakhtar work another lovely opening again and Luiz Adriano's cross from the right is cleared from danger with Willian waiting to pounce.

Yellow card
2030: Torsten Frings picks up the first booking of the evening for a foul on Mariusz Lewandowski. We're into the two minutes off added-on time in the first half.

BBC Sport's James Doe in Istanbul: "Just when the band of adopted Werder fans around me (hailing from Manchester, Canada, Turkey and Georgia) had got a bit of atmosphere going, Shakhtar score and it's all gone a bit flat. But wait, Naldo's free-kick has got them going again!"

2026: Wow that's a sensational piece of football. Mariusz Lewandowski lets fly with a first-time rocket shot from 30 yards and Tim Wiese sprawls across his line to make a magnificent, full-length save. Stunning.

2024: Five minutes until half-time, and this one's fairly flown by so far. Andriy Pyatov comes for a cross and gets nowhere near it, but Claudio Pizarro is adjudged to have committed a foul. He's struggling, the Ukraine keeper.

Goooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal
2020: GOAL: And conjure up something a little different they do - but Andriy Pyatov has just suffered the most embarrassing moment of his career. Ronaldo Naldo hammers it in from 30 yards and it's almost straight at Pyatov, but he can only parry it into the top corner of his own net. Heartbreaker for him, parity for Werder. Game on.
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Werder Bremen

2019: Markus Rosenberg turns neatly inside Luis Fernandinho 30 yards out and he is brought down. It's Diego territory, but they'll have to conjure up something a little different tonight.

2017: Some concern about Luiz Adriano, who fairly thumps into the ground after an aerial challenge with Peter Niemeyer. He needs a bit of treatment, but he might just be OK you know.

2015: Luiz Adriano returns the favour, setting up Willian on the left-hand side of the Werder area, but after cutting inside his right-foot shot lacks power and Tim Wiese picks up with minimum fuss.

Text in your views on 81111
From Matty Man, via text on 81111: "Oh how Werder Bremen miss Diego. The guy is a little creative genius. It's a travesty that he has to miss out tonight."

2012: They're threatening to run riot here. Willian tees up Luiz Adriano down the left and he cuts inside and balloons a shot over. Nervy times for the Germans.

Goooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal
2010: GOAL: Werder get caught flat-footed by a lightning quick break by the Ukraine side and Luiz Adriano is suddenly away down the middle - he keeps his cool expertly to clip the ball wonderfully over the advancing Tim Wiese.
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 Werder Bremen

2009: This brilliant, brilliant piece of news just in from Germany: Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has promised to buy a holiday in Italy for the players of Werder Bremen if they beat Bayern's German title rivals Wolfsburg on the final day of the season on Saturday. Genius.

2006: More good movement from Shakhtar creates some space for Ilsinho down their right, but his cross is rubbish and sails out for a goalkick. Darijo Srna, meanwhile, requires a little bit of treatment.

2003: Clemens Fritz flicks the ball brilliantly between his legs 30 yards out to create room to shoot, but he probably wishes he hadn't as the effort flies many a mile over Andriy Pyatov's crossbar.

2003: Werder are in the game a little more now, knocking the ball around at the back, gaining a bit in confidence. I wonder how long it'll be goalless for...

From The Adventures Of Giuseppe Rossi on 606: "Is there a better name than Rodrigues Jadson?? I always liked Denny Landzaat, formerly of Wigan, but Jadson rules more."

1958: Ronaldo Naldo gets a nasty-looking blow to his foot as he concedes a corner, and moments later Willian is lucky to avoid a booking for a late challenge on Werder's Clemens Fritz.

BBC Sport's James Doe in Istanbul: "After a ferry ride across the Bosphorus and a chaotic 1.5km walk, I find myself in the relative calm of the stadium where I've pretty much got a row to myself. It seems only hardy neutrals venture this far!"

Text in your views on 81111
From Riise's left foot, Edinburgh, via text on 81111: "I was going to be a neutral for this final, but with names like Rat and Fernandinho how can you not support Shakhtar?"

1952: Frank Baumann has Werder's first chance as Mariusz Lewandowski's clearance falls to him 15 yards out, but the captain sends his left-foot volley well wide. Presentable.

1950: This is Shakhtar's first European final, and they've made the better start in Istanbul. Ilsinho (told you) just danced past Ronaldo Naldo (told you), and a minute later Rodrigues Jadson slipped in Luiz Adriano, who slots wide from 18 yards. Should have scored. Great names, though.

1947: Torsten Frings commits the first foul of the evening, on Willian - one of several brilliantly-named Shakhtar players in action tonight. More to follow on them, for sure.

1945: Bang on cue on his special day, Luis Medina Cantalejo gets us under way inside the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

1942: And the latest entry appears, just like magic... Haha, sorry, just fooling around. The teams are out in Istanbul, it's almost time to get it on.

1939: I'd be surprised if we were many more than six minutes away from kick-off in Istanbul. It's not just the Uefa Cup bowing out tonight - Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo officiates for the last time in his international career. The highlights? "Three Madrid-Barca fixtures, the World Cup in Germany, Copa del Rey finals and Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool." Good work.

1930: Stevo's debut auto refresh predo:
Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 Werder Bremen
Werder to win on penalties (they're German)

1925: The last Uefa Cup final is coming from the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Turkey, I'll have you know. Now then, European finals in Istanbul - anyone ever seen a good one? Can't think, myself...

1915: Shakhtar Donetsk v Werder Bremen line-ups
Shakhtar Donetsk:
Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Chigrinsky, Rat, Lewandowski, Fernandinho, Ilsinho, Jadson, Willian, Luiz Adriano.
Subs: Khudzamov, Duljaj, Gai, Gladkyy, Ischenko, Chyzhov, Moreno.
Werder Bremen: Wiese, Fritz, Prodl, Naldo, Boenisch, Niemeyer, Frings, Baumann, Ozil, Pizarro, Rosenberg.
Subs: Vander, Pasanen, Tosic, Vranjes, Hunt, Tziolis, Harnik.
Referee: Luis Medina Cantalejo (Spain)

1913: Team news shortly, but this I can tell you now: Werder Bremen's Diego will not play tonight, as he is suspended. It's a blow for the Germans, for the final, for football, and not least for the sublimely-gifted 24-year-old Brazilian, too.

1909: Your thoughts are welcome as always, on this very special night. Any Uefa Cup memories would go down a right treat, I'd bet. My favourite? Forest seeing off Auxerre in October 1995 and nearly 30,000 fans singing 'Last team in Europe' as they left the City Ground, upon hearing that Liverpool had lost to Brondby. Golden. 81111 is the text number, and the debate is under way on 606. Join the debate on 606

1905: It is, of course, Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk versus German outfit Werder Bremen, to see who will become the last winners of this great old tournament before it rebrands itself as the Uefa Europa League. And to find out the very latest updates, you don't need to press F5 anymore. It's a brave new world.

1900: It's the last Uefa Cup final of all time. But somehow, I've a feeling that you, the punters, might just be tempted to call this one 'The Auto Refresh Final'. Welcome, to all sorts of history in the making.
