Impressive Murray marches on

Andy Murray became the only man to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon without dropping a set as he saw off American Sam Querrey in round four.

The British number one came through 7-5 6-3 6-4 against the 6ft 6in Queen's Club champion to reach the last eight for the third year in a row.

Murray, 23, struggled at the end of the first set but began and ended in the form that impressed in earlier rounds.

He will play France's 10th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals.

"It was a very good match," Murray told BBC Sport. "I had my chances at the end of first set, it was a huge point in the match because he had the momentum and I managed to nick it away from him. It's tough playing against someone with such a big serve."

Despite being the elder man by only five months, Murray went into their fourth-round match with far greater experience at the back end of Grand Slams.

The Scot was looking to reach the quarter-finals of a major for the sixth time, while Querrey was playing in the last 16 at the highest level for only the second time.

However, the Californian has made a major improvement this year, reaching his current career-high ranking of 21 and winning three titles, including at Queen's Club earlier this month.

His strengths are quickly apparent as a big serve and heavy forehand, but Murray was able to cope with them for the most part and take advantage of his weaker backhand and suspect movement.

The Querrey forehand did some damage straight away on a blisteringly hot Centre Court as the American earned two break points in the opening game, but a backhand pass went inches long before Murray fired a forehand down the line to get out of trouble.

And after calling upon his serve to see off a break point moments later, Querrey succumbed to the pressure as early as his second service game.

Murray drew his man into mistakes by bringing him into the net with a drop shot, pushing him out wide chasing a forehand and then forcing an error at the net to break for 3-1.

When Murray made his first unforced error of the match as he served for the set with 32 minutes on the clock, it seemed to be no more significant than a statistical blight on an otherwise impressive nine games.

However, the set turned on its head in a matter of seconds from 40-15 when Murray double-faulted and missed a makeable forehand as three chances to seal the set went begging.

Querrey got the break back, and things got worse for Murray at 5-5 when a forehand into the net and a double-fault left him at 0-40.

With the set fast slipping away, the fourth seed gathered himself with a backhand winner down the line but was fortunate at 30-40 to see Querrey hammer a mid-court forehand into the tramlines.

It was a huge opportunity missed for the American and it was no great surprise to see him blast a forehand long at set point down in the following game.

Murray's slump continued at the start of the second set as he was forced to recover from 15-40 in game two, and he was making just 23% of his first serves, but Querrey was not having it easy on serve either and a double-fault on the fourth break point of game four handed over the initiative once again.

There were no alarms for Murray in serving out the set this time and it was a long way back for Querrey, who had battled past Xavier Malisse 9-7 in the fifth set of his previous match.

Murray scented victory at 4-4 in the third, chasing down a drop shot and poking a brilliant backhand down the line before making the same shot on the run from behind the baseline, and he converted his third break point with a sweet angled forehand.

The home favourite settled any remaining nerves on Centre Court by hammering down two aces from 15-30 and Querrey obliged on match point by sending a forehand long after two hours and six minutes.

"The shot-making today was great, especially towards the end of the first set," said Murray. "I played well, just a few dips in the performance."
