“We have tended to turn the Christian faith into a relationship through Christ with a God who is the divine vending machine in the sky, there to meet our every need. ‘Unhappy? Unattractive? Unsuccessful? Unmarried? Unfulfilled? Come to Christ and He will give you everything you ask for.’ We forget that God is not primarily in the business of meeting needs. And when we make Him out to be, we squeeze Him out of His rightful place at the center of our lives, and we put ourselves in His place. God is in the business of being God.”–Daniel Henderson, Culture Shift

I have loved all your devotionals! I don’t understand this one… God doesn’t always give people a mate, or healing from sickness, or a job, or a raise, a house, or a car, etc. Why did you say He always gives you what you ask for? I believe He will give you what you need and it may not be what you ask for. I know people in all these above categories and they are strong, strong Christians. In seems to me, that it would be better to say, God will always give you His best in the light of eternity. It seems as if you said the opposite of what you started out saying. Please help as I am confused.Thank you, and God bless your ministry. Mary H.
The first half of the quote through “Come to Christ and he will give you everything you ask for” represents what a lot of people mistakenly think about God and prayer. The rest of the above quote represents what I think is the biblical position. James says that we often ask but do not receive because we ask wrongly to spend it on our own desires. Sorry for any confusion. The purpose of putting this quote up was to help people see that God doesn’t give us everything we think we need or want. Indeed, as you said, He gives us what He knows is for Hope that clears things up.
