2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport: here are the official pictures and details

by Alex

The fastest production car and one that’s holding on to the record in style is the Bugatti Veyron. It even has been successful in creating a world record for itself in this field and ironically has beaten its own record for creating the new record. The test driver who sat behind wheels of the new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport car made good an average speed of 268 mph. the driver and the car achieved this fete at the Ehra-Lessien test track which is located just outside of Wolfsburg. The previous record which was held by the Veyron 16.4 coupe was 15 mph lesser than this present new record. Not only is the car, by performance faster than its previous version, even the conditions of the day helped the car in achieving its feat. The Bugatti themselves had predicted a speed of 264 mph.

The record breaking speed would however have a telling effect on the tires and for this reason Bugatti team would be setting an electronic speed control device on the actual production version. This would limit the speed to 258 mph. To achieve the high velocity characteristic the car has been subjected to very precise aerodynamic changes and the most prominent one amongst them is the removal of the steamship-esque silver air intakes. To further enhance the supercar’s aerodynamic abilities, the removal has been substituted by a pair of roof-mounted NACA ducts. Extension of the roof has also been carried out and it now covers the engine. The engine is a W16 one and its turbos, four in number are larger than on the original engine. Intercoolers that feed the turbos have also been increased in dimensions. This has given the engine an increase in power which now reds as 1200 hp and the torque has increased by 184 lb ft to stand at 1106 lb ft as of now. The front fascia has been enlarged and a double diffuser at the rear with twin center-mounted exhaust tips substituted for the “regular” Veyron’s single, squared-off outlet. All these modifications have helped in giving the car more breathing space.

A longish spring travel, anti roll bars that are stiffer and dampers brand new have been added to the car for modification to the suspension system. The body of the car has been made of carbon-fiber monocoque. This assists in increase of torsion rigidity as well as reduction in weight. And Bugatti team has promised to give the production car with a clear coated paint for all its rear panels. This would give a view of the wave. The photographs depict the use of the cleared carbon with the underlining of orange accents.

The name ‘Super Sport’ has been derived or inspired from the Chevy’s SS cars bearing this same suffix. Bentleys as well as Jaguars also have applied this suffix to their cars.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August is the time and event where the new Super sport would make its appearance. The production would begin at the Bugatti’s Molsheim Veyron hand-crafting facility in the fall. There is yet the roadster version to be announced. As such the price of this Super Sport itself has not been declared as yet.
