Activision confirms 2011 Call of Duty as ‘large-scale’ FPS

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, has teased that next year’s instalment in the Call of Duty franchise will take the form of a “large-scale” first-person action romp. Surprised? No, neither are we.

Details are understandably thin on the ground at present, though whatever the company has up its sleeves looks set to follow the series’ tradition of assaulting store shelves in the run up to the Christmas holiday season.

"In the back-half of 2011, we’ll launch a new, large-scale Call of Duty first-person action title," said Hirshberg, speaking during Activision’s Q3 earnings call this week.

"The creative talent and resources that we now have devoted to the Call of Duty brand are unprecedented and given the gameplay we’ve seen to date, we could not be more excited about next year’s release.”

Speculation has been mounting over the past few months as to exactly who will be handling development of 2011’s instalment, with both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games coming up as popular candidates.

The latest entry in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops, is scheduled for release on November 9.
