FFXIII-2 will be darker than FFX-2 , says Square

Square Enix duo Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have revealed that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will do away with FFX-2’s happy-go-lucky pop sensibilities, instead injecting a much darker feel into the proceedings.

Chatting with the latest issue of Dengeki (via Siliconera), the pair said that the sequel will allow players to digest the whole story surrounding the FFXIII universe, and teased that the plot won’t be entirely straightforward.

FFXIII-2 has players on the hunt for the gateway to the invisible world of Bunibelle, with a goddess by the name of Etro apparently taking on a central role in the plot. Aside from Lighting, other FFXIII will also crop up at too, some of which will apparently boast major and unexpected changes.

The Japanese publication also reveals that the game’s developers are stewing over the possibility of including an Easy Mode (as seen in FFXIII Ultimate Hits International) in the game, and that the team has taken on board criticism from folk outside of Square and Japan. This includes opinions on characters, story and interface.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due out in Japan on PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year.
