St. Augustine: Community Resilience and Cultural Resources
Flagler College is partnering with the City of St. Augustine to engage community members in a dialogue on the issue of community resilience, sea level rise and the future impact of flooding on historic places in St. Augustine.  The results of this survey will be presented at the "Keeping History Above Water: St. Augustine" conference, a partnership between Flagler College, the City of St. Augustine, the University of Florida and the Newport Restoration Foundation, slated for May 5-8, 2019. The importance of St. Augustine's historic sites, districts and buildings is addressed in local emergency and long range planning documents.  For example, one of the guiding documents used to mitigate flooding hazards in St. Augustine, the St. Johns County Local Mitigation Strategy Plan (LMS) highlights the importance of St. Augustine as "the Nation’s Oldest City." "Its age alone makes the structures and infrastructure particularly vulnerable to hurricane damage... whose loss would represent the loss of irreplaceable historical and cultural resources."  Understanding what places matter and why the community values the Nation's Oldest City is the purpose of this survey.  The survey results will better inform citizens on ways to support the City and partnering cultural institutions in adapting St. Augustine's "irreplaceable" historic and economic assets to future conditions.
