When Your Foot Won't Come Loose (Seeing It Through)
In the movie "Footloose" the character Ren (played by Kevin Bacon) finds himself on a narrow dirt road riding a tractor in a game of "chicken." (see video clip below) From the opposite direction another tractor is bearing down on him at breakneck speed. It's not looking good. So Ren decides he's going to bail out of his tractor. But there's a slight problem. His shoelace gets caught on some of the gears and so he's stuck. He can't get out. Circumstances force Ren to see the game of "chicken" through.
Of course, if you've watched the movie you know what happens. The guy in the other tractor, fearing the collision, turns off the road. Ren wins. He even plays it up (takes credit for the victory) like the shoelace thing never took place.
And isn't it true? There are points in life where we're ready to bail out, we want to bail out, we're gonna bail out, but the fact is we can't bail out. We're stuck. And even though we see that a crash is coming, we must remain where we're at. We gotta stay. Too many people are counting on us. (It may be as simple as: Our family needs to eat!) We have to ride it out. Could it be that you're in that position yourself today?
I'd like to suggest to you that the potential exists for a happy ending (like in "Footloose"). How will you ever really know if you keep jumping ship?
