Crystal Castles Chiptune Sound?

Post by mfrazer1989 » Wed Dec 15, 2010 6:53 am

I'm trying to recreate the sound repeated throughout the video. I've figured out how to make the main melody, vocode, etc. It's the chip sound between 0:00-0:17 that I'm having trouble figuring out.

Any tips on creating the sound? I would sample it, but it's really not isolated enough to make it work. I have an 8bit synth as well, so I'm wondering if I can use that. Mainly trying to find the sound and effects necessary.

Have you tried the Magical 8bit Plugin? I believe it's freeware, and very good for nintendoesque chip sounds.

just steal old chiptunes from other artists like they did.

and while you're at it, you can also rip-off Trevor Brown's art for your album cover.

I remember reading that most of the chip sounds form CC comes out of a modded korg containing an SID chip form an old commodore.

sounds like interweb bollocks to me, but I do know that plogue's chipsounds plug in has some nice SID sounds in it.

They ended up paying Trevor from what I gather. The GNU licensed chiptunes in a commercial release issue I'm not certain of.

The singer in this band is freakin cute. <3
Music is so so, but damn? 8O

Hey mfrazer1989, any of the suggestions will work.
It's not a hard sound to cop.

Get out just fine, name a cuter singer and I'll most likely disagree, she fits my gaper bub! :)

I'll add that scene kids personality wise aren't my cup of tea though.

I've got the sound (I've been using Magical 8bit Plugin), but it's the modulation I guess I'm having problems with (the slight pitch wobble for lack of a better term). HOWEVER, I was able to find a sound in Reason that was close enough. I just used a sound in Redrum and changed the pitch accordingly.

Thanks, everyone, for the help!

She's a scene kid as far as I'm concerned, she looks like everybody else who hangs out at the Cha Cha here in Seattle, somewhere in between indie and hipster. Oh look and ironic t-shirt with a leather jacket, scene kid eye make up, and riot grrrl energy. I'm sure to someone outside the NW that's not scene, but here it is.
She's still cute though, and you've yet to produce what you think is a cute girl so until you do your argument is invalid. :P
