Jenson Button takes positives from 'tough' weekend

Jenson Button is taking positives from the improvement in performance McLaren has experienced this weekend in Bahrain despite qualifying at the back of the grid.

Button's McLaren came to a halt on its outlap in Q1 with an electrical issue (which was still under investigation at the time of writing), meaning he did not even set a time in qualifying. It has been a difficult weekend for Button, but team-mate Fernando Alonso managed to make the second session for the first time this year.

Button said weekends like this were expected with Honda coming in as a new engine manufacturer, taking a swipe at Renault in the process.

"You're going to have problems at the start, as we always said we would, and I think we've had fewer problems than another manufacturer out there, which isn't so bad considering they have been at it for a year," he said. "It's a tough day but it's good to see progress and the progress is more important now in terms of pace in the car."

Button said he also took some consolation from his time in final practice, which was good enough for 11th fastest in the session.

"We're racing drivers and you want to drive your racing car as fast as you can. Obviously when you are limited to running in P1 and P2, with two stops on the circuit, it's tough. But how things felt this weekend, in terms of driving the car this morning, it felt pretty good. I was quite happy with it, I ended up 11th. It's still only P3, but it was a good feeling.

"You would say we're definitely making progress, we're improving every race we go to, but just a tough weekend on my side of the garage."
