The departure of junior guard Olivier Hanlan to the NBA, followed by the recent decision of 6-foot-11-inch sophomore forward Will Magarity to transfer, will leave Boston College men’s basketball coach Jim Christian with nine available scholarships to replenish his roster.

Christian fully expected this season would result in a huge turnover of his roster with the departure of seven seniors, including a pair of fifth-year transfers in Aaron Brown and Dmitri Batten.

Christian said Magarity, of Stockholm, Sweden, did not indicate where he was planning to transfer.

“I think he’s still evaluating all his options. He wanted to be able to evaluate all his options and so we said fine,” Christian said.

Magarity averaged 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 22 games last season. He missed the last 10 games of the season because of a concussion-related issue.

While Magarity’s decision to transfer was unexpected, Christian said he could not project what impact, if any, it would have on BC’s frontcourt, which is expected to return 7-1 senior Dennis Clifford and 6-11 redshirt freshman Idy Diallo.

“Until the entire roster is put together, you don’t know what impact it will have,” Christian said. “It’s too early to forecast what anybody’s role will be. We have a lot of scholarships available and, as we fill them, those things will become more and more clear.”
