ANN ARBOR -- Don Brown guided the No. 1-ranked defense in America last season.
Apparently, that was good enough for Jim Harbaugh.
Sports Illustrated reported Sunday that Brown -- who spent the past three seasons running Boston College's defense -- will be Michigan's new defensive coordinator.
Brown, 60, led a Boston College defense that ranked No. 1 nationally with 254.3 yards per game allowed in 2015. BC's rush defense allowed 83.2 yards per game (No. 2) and its pass defense was ranked No. 8 (171.2).
The Eagles gave up 15.3 points per game last season, which ranked No. 4 nationally.
While Brown has no ties to Harbaugh in terms of coaching stops, his coaching career stretches back to 1982 with a stop at Dartmouth. He's also been a head coach three times.
After running Dartmouth's defense from 1984-86, Brown moved on to Yale (1987-1992) as a defensive coordinator before taking his first head coaching job at Plymouth State.
Brown went 25-6 in three seasons at the DIII school before making stops at Brown (1996-97) and UMass (1998-99) as a defensive coordinator. In 2000, Brown returned to the head coaching ranks at 1-AA Northeastern -- he went 27-20 over four seasons with the Huskies.
Brown then led UMass' program for five seasons -- beginning in 2004. He went 13-2 in 2006 and lost in the 1-AA national title game before going 10-3 the next season, falling in the 1-AA quarterfinals. Overall, he went 43-19 in five seasons at UMass before jumping into FBS coaching with a defensive coordinator job at Maryland in 2009.
He spent two years at Maryland and two years at Connecticut before taking the Boston College job in 2013. He also had a brief stint as a baseball coach, leading Yale to a 26-10 record in 1992.
Brown ran a 4-3 defensive scheme at Boston College last season, and has been known historically as a blitz-heavy coach.
Michigan's vacancy was created earlier this month when former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin left to take Maryland's head coaching job.
