How to Update Your Hackintosh to Mac OS 10.6.6

The Mac App Store may have pros and cons, but you Hackintosh users are probably itching to upgrade to 10.6.6 and check it out. Here's what you need to know about the upgrade.

10.6.6 isn't a big update, so many of you may be able to upgrade through Software Update without any difficulty. Assuming you used the Tonymacx86 method, there are a few things you'll want to be aware of beforehand:

Graphics -

If you're using a NVIDIA 4xx "Fermi" card, you will have to re-run the

NVIDIA Update

to regain full acceleration. Make sure you have a Mac Pro System Definition installed from MultiBeast, or it will not let you install. We're fixing the tonymacx86 NVIDIA Update version.

Audio -

The Combo update will replace your AppleHDA.kext. If you aren't using the ALC889a codec, you will have to reinstall AppleHDA Rollback using MultiBeast. If you're using VoodooHDA, you will not need to make any modifications.

USB -

The Combo update will replace your IOUSBFamily, kext. To restore full USB functionality on a non-DSDT or EasyBeast system install USB Rollback using MultiBeast before reboot.

Download MultiBeast

.

Sleep enabler kexts

are version specific. Remove before installing the update.

Adam is unfortunately out of town, so we haven't tested this update on our Hackintosh build yet, but the update went smoothly on my slightly different build. Just remember to delete SleepEnabler.kext, if you use it, from /Extra/Extensions/ before running the upgrade. I didn't need any other fixes between 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. If you're updating from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6, you may need to run the Audio or USB fixes above. They're quick and easy fixes, though, so you shouldn't have any trouble.

As always, everyone's build is a little different, so your mileage may vary. Good luck, and if you're running one of our builds, let us know how the update goes for you in the comments.

Update: Looks like our last Hackintosh build updates smoothly, with no updates necessary (besides the removal of SleepEnabler.kext).
