SPOTLIGHT: The Good Reads Panel

Over the next few weeks, we'll be blogging about some of our programming. We want you to have time to read the books, so you can join the discussion.

Saturday, 10:30-11:45 A.M.
Good Reads
California Room

Four thoughtful panelists each pick a book they like to talk about. Each panelist reads the book chosen by the other three, and then the four of them talk about the books. The books chosen are:

  • Fritz Leiber, Our Lady of Darkness: The city of San Francisco itself is haunted and haunting in this pioneering work of modern urban fantasy, which blends of historical characters, mysterious books, mappable streetscapes, San Francisco types, and Cthulhunian influences.
  • China Mieville, Un Lun Dun: Two 12-year-old girls slip into an alternate London. This vividly realized quest story uses and subverts the fairy-tale/adventure/kids' book tropes in which the Chosen One must save the world.
  • Wen Spencer, A Brother's Price: Jorin is about to be sold into marriage when he -- yes, he -- helps a wounded princess. Fascinating story of a world where males are so rare they have become a commodity.
  • Kirill Yeskov, The Last Ringbearer: this free download retells Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga from the point of view of the other side. Translated from the Russian.
