Bill Moyers talked with philosopher Jacob Needleman about his new study of the role of money in our culture in 1990 for the series, A WORLD OF IDEAS II.

There's always been greed, there's always been avarice. There's always been a problem with people wanting more than they need. That's caused more problems for the human race than almost anything else. But cultures have always wanted other things, too. They've wanted honor. They've wanted power. Love. Respect. Beauty. It's hard to say now, though, that our culture wants anything else as much as it wants. money.
Jacob Needleman is a professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University and the author of many books, including THE ESSENTIAL MARCUS AURELIUS, WHY CAN'T WE BE GOOD?, THE AMERICAN SOUL, THE WISDOM OF LOVE, TIME AND THE SOUL, THE HEART OF PHILOSOPHY, LOST CHRISTIANITY, and MONEY AND THE MEANING OF LIFE. In addition to his teaching and writing, he serves as a consultant in the fields of psychology, education, medical ethics, philanthropy, and business.
