The Constituency of Couva North is in full support of the decision made by the Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to institute a limited State of Emergency.
As the Honourable Prime Minister said in her statement to the nation last night, "there comes a time in the history of a nation when we have to take very strong action; very decisive action". The People's Partnership Government is now taking such action by implementing an aggressive reaction response against those who seek to threaten the lives and livelihood of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. This response has become evident by the limited State of Emergency instituted by the Honourable Prime Minister, effective midnight last night. The crime crisis which was allowed to grow unhindered by the previous administration is being prioritized by the People's Partnership Government. As the Honourable Prime Minister stated, "a problem of this nature has been due to years of neglect and will not disappear overnight". "The current crime spree dictates that more must be done and stronger action has to be employed now...it must be a response that will halt the current spike in gang activity and crime in general in the shortest possible time."The wanton disregard for life demonstrated by those the Honourable Prime Minister described as "marauding groups of thugs bent on creating havoc on our society" must be addressed. The Honourable Prime Minister promised, "we will hunt them down and we will search them out and bring them to justice."
These strong measures currently being implemented by the government give hope to the people; they can now envision a future Trinidad and Tobago finally free from the high level of crime which has been plaguing the country for decades. The People's Partnership Government recognises that citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are its greatest assets and have to be protected at all times. Each and every life is precious and if this initiative succeeds in sparing just one innocent life then it would have been worthwhile. It is recognised that this limited State of Emergency will have an impact on the lives of innocent, law abiding citizens, but it is also understood that sacrifices have to be made in order to achieve the greater good. The temporary inconvenience experienced by citizens due to the Limited State of Emergency pales in comparison to its outcome. The Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the People's Partnership Government continue their struggle against crime in an effort to protect the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and ensure a life of peace and tranquillity.
We, the Couva North Constituency, the Couva North Executive and the Member of Parliament for Couva North, the Honourable Minister Ramona Ramdial are very grateful for the efforts being made to deter crime and therefore say a heartfelt thank you to the Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the People's Partnership Government and continue to pledge our support in their endeavours.
