(Daily Mail)   Kensington Palace aides hid a nameplate on a painting from 1660 with the word 'negro' on it - just moments before William and Kate entertained the Obamas. Because everything should have been PC in the 1600's   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line

A pot plant was also put in place to cover where the plaque would have been.

Dude, they covered it with a pot plant? You go, William and Kate.

On the brown corner table was a bottle of £14 Gordon's gin, a 70cl bottle of Smirnoff ice worth £12, and a bottle of water on a silver tray

No.  That's a 1.75L bottle of regular Smirnoff worth ~$20 (in the U.S.).  And that doesn't look like a bottle of Gordon's either but I don't drink Gordon's with any regularity.

Maybe, just maybe it was payback for the iPod full of Obama's speeches he gave the queen one year?
Since Obama showed so much class with his previous actions they figured they'd provide the same level of hospitality.

So, this guy is tying up his boat with a friend, and they observe this fellow bent over, walking slowly, and  counting:  "23, 24, 25, 26, 27....".  The guy is curious, so he says "Hey, buddy, what are you counting?".  Guy answers back "I'm counting the gaps between the boards".   So the two guys on the boat shake their heads and get back to tying up the boat, and the man goes back counting "28, 29, 30, 31.....".  After a minute, they hear this loud splash.  The guy turns to his friend, shrugs his shoulders, and says "When you're out of slits, you're out of pier".

Because everything should have been PC in the 1600's

This 2 second act of good-hosting-just-in-case sure is showing the pussification of the world. You're right to complain, Trumpmitter.

I don't think the Obamas would get offended, but "should we block that with a plant or something?" "yea, why not" is almost literally the least amount of work someone can put into not being a dick.

"features a black servant boy"  In 1660 that was a slave.  So you thought the word Negro would be offensive but a giant painting of a young slave was still ok to keep up on the wall?

Let's not pretend the 1660's were better or worse than they actually were. There's no need to tip toe around Obama; covering up that nameplate is just childish.

Seems reasonable to me. Black americans like the obamas already have to deal with being constantly reminded of their long history as second class citizens to white European cultures.

I don't think any culture should hide from its own history, but temporarily covering an overt and unnecessary reminder of white normative standards while the black visiting head of state is in the building shows respect and empathy on the part of the British royals.

there can be a fine line between sparing somebodies feelings and treating them like a child(or worse whitewashing the past). censoring a historic painting(no matter how temporarily) because the Obamas might see it is so far over that line it's insulting.

I agree completely.

That doesn't mean those paintings are similar though. The two paintings are vastly different in tone, The one with the nameplate removed is at best neutral and at worst displays the scene as idyllic while the Rockwell painting is very clearly and powerfully against racism.  I don't think that Obama is going to throw a tantrum over either painting but I could understand someone who was positive about the rockwell and not the other.

/To be fair I can also understand the reverse if the reasons for it are related to the art itself rather than the subject.

No, it was on loan in early 2011-ish. But that's probably for the best. I'm glad it visited, but more people can see it if it's someplace public.
