VMAs: Which Performance Triggered the Biggest Sales Spike?

Beyonce and Ariana Grande were among the artists whose sales benefited in the afterglow of the MTV VMAs.

MTV doled out the Moonmen during Sunday’s Video Music Awards, but the musicians who really won at the awards show are the ones who performed.

After performing a snippet from every single trackduring a 16-minute medley and receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Beyonce saw her self-titled album jump up to No. 7 on the iTunes album charts (from No. 40). The specific tracks that saw the biggest week-over-week jumps were “XO” (up 1,648 percent) and “Flawless” (up 1,237 percent).

Ariana Grande, who collaborated with MTV for a summer-long campaign to launch her sophomore album, followed her show opener by releasing My Everything at midnight. It premiered atop the iTunes album chart, while performance songs “Bang Bang” and “Break Free” jumped 130 percent and 24 percent week-over-week, respectively.

How did the other “Bang Bang” artists do? Nicki Minaj’s singles catalog spiked 215 percent — with her Sir Mix-A-Lot-sampling single “Anaconda” jumping 60 percent — while Jessie J saw her singles catalog jump 114 percent.

Sam Smith, who took the Forum stage for “Stay With Me,” saw his breakout ballad jump 90 percent and combined versions of his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, increase 95 percent.

Maroon 5, who made their VMA performance debut with an outdoor set, enjoyed a 166 percent jump in preorders for their forthcoming album, V, while single “Maps” increased 32 percent. 5 Seconds of Summer’s VMA debut triggered an 85 percent jump for their “Amnesia” single and a 35 percent lift for their self-titled album.

As for the red-carpet preshow acts, Fifth Harmony’s “Bo$$” hopped up 16 percent for the week, while their album jumped up four spots to No. 4 on the iTunes album chart. CharliXCX’s “Boom Clap” spiked 22 percent.
