Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is edging closer to production in Australia, after the government there approved a $20.2 million incentives package on Monday.
Up until the announcement, there was still some mystery as to which Disney production was behind the request for a renewal and increase in the incentives, with previous tentpole production, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake falling into limbo after David Fincher left the director’s seat.
A spokesman for the Australian Arts Minister George Brandis said, “The government is pleased to agree to Disney’s request to enable earlier funding to be repurposed for the production of Pirates of the Caribbean 5.”
Disney had asked the Australian government to reallocate the incentives granted for 20,000 and boost them to 30 percent of Pirates 5‘s budget, thought to be a figure north of $200 million. The federal government’s offer, though an increase, is still short of what Disney is looking for, and it is thought the studio will go to the individual state agencies to make up the difference.
The state of Queensland currently looks to be the favorite to land the production, if indeed it comes to Australia. The Queensland Times reports that the government’s decision comes just days after wrangles over location tax offsets were jeopardizing the production. The Queensland Times said that many of the scenes for Pirates 5 are expected to be filmed at the special tanks at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast and that Disney had also scouted likely locations in Far North Queensland.
Pirates 5 is likely to hit cinemas in the summer of 2017 and will see Johnny Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow and Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg direct.
