TiVo debuts the one DVR to rule them all

The new TiVo Mega digital video recorder has 24 Terabytes of storage, about 4,000 hours of HD content or 26,000 hours of standard definition content.

TiVo is developing the ultimate DVR for TV lovers.

The new TiVo Mega, with 24 terabytes of recording space, can record about 4,000 hours of high-definition content -- about 24 weeks of constant playback, or 3 years' worth in standard definition.

A prototype of the TiVo Mega is set to be unveiled later this week at the CEDIA Expo in Denver. The high-end DVR is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2015 for about $5,000.

"Size matters. People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone," said TiVo chief marketing officer Ira Bahr in a statement. "Now, with TiVo Mega they can always know their show or movie is still there to watch later. TiVo Mega offers more than twelve times the storage of any cable or satellite DVR ... (and) is the solution for the power user who wants to record everything."

Made to be mounted in a component rack, the DVR has six tuners for six simultaneous recordings. You can stream content to your phone or tablet within and outside the home, as well as download programming to devices.

The TiVo Mega can serve as a whole home DVR with users capable of watching different shows in different rooms. You can control the DVR with a remote or an app your smartphone or tablet. Data drives can be swapped out, too.

Like current TiVo DVRs, you can add a CableCard so the Mega can serve as your pay TV system's settop box. A lifetime subscription to TiVo's service ($14.99 monthly) is included.
