After waiting out the thunder and lightning at Tri-Mountain Golf Course on Aug. 12, participants in the Salmon Creek Business Group’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament raised $1,400 for the Safe Kids Clark County’s life jacket program.

Anne Johnston, Public Health Nurse for Clark County Public Health came and spoke to the group about the drownings that have occurred over the summer; sharing that many of the folks weren’t planning to swim at all.

“The Life Jacket Loaner Stations are located at Klineline Ponds and Marine Park, but hopefully by next summer another can be at Vancouver Lake Park,” Johnston said. “When life jackets don’t get returned to the station, we are hoping the life jacket is going home and being used over and over by that family.”

Board members also shared with the participants that w! hen they were planning the 2014 tournament, they were having trouble deciding which group to support this year. When reading the call for donations of life jackets and cash, the Salmon Creek Business Group knew they could help, especially given a summer drowning at Klineline Pond.

The tournament, sponsored by Columbia River Occupational Health and Umpqua Bank, chooses a different nonprofit each year to support. Past recipients have been: WSU Vancouver student scholarships, middle and elementary schools in the Salmon Creek area, and Legacy Salmon Creek’s therapy wall mural.
