SMU is the only winless team left in the country
SMU is the only winless team left in the country. (USATSI)

Anybody can put together a ranking of the 25 best teams in the country, but it takes a true college football fan to compile a list of the 25 worst. Every Tuesday of the regular season, the Eye On College Football's Tom Fornelli will do just that.

There may be four undefeated teams remaining on the FBS level (don't forget Marshall), but after this last weekend there's only one team in the country still without a win. Both Kent State and Idaho picked up wins this weekend, leaving SMU as the only team with a zero in the win column.

Just more proof that going winless is harder than going undefeated.

SMU remains No. 1 in our poll, obviously, but there were a lot of changes overall this week. The bottom 10 has been shaken up, but more interesting than that is the fact that we now have a representative from every single conference in the FBS. Yes, that's right. Each of the Power 5 conferences is now represented in The Bottom 25.

I told you this would happen after we entered conference play, but you didn't want to believe me. Or maybe you did, I don't know. I don't actually talk to you.

Another change that we see this week is that the MAC is no longer the most dominant conference in The Bottom 25. That honor now belongs to the American Athletic Conference. But how long will it hold on to that title?

Let's get to the rankings.

25. Illinois 3-4 (Last week: Not ranked)

Best Win: 42-34 vs. Western Kentucky |Worst Loss: 38-27 vs. Purdue

Average Score: 28.6-35.9 | This Week: vs. Minnesota

Illinois finally enters our poll, and it does so as the only ranked team with three wins on the season. It helps when those three wins are against Youngstown State, Western Kentucky and Texas State, with none of them coming by more than 11 points. The Illini have also played four games against teams from Power 5 conferences, going 0-4 and losing by an average of 19.25 points per game. Considering how this team has played in the Big Ten the last couple of seasons, it's going to continue climbing these rankings in the weeks to come.

24. Colorado 2-5 (NR)

Best Win: 21-12 vs. Hawaii |Worst Loss: 31-17 vs. Colorado State

Average Score: 31.1-38.6 | This Week: vs. UCLA

Colorado gives the Pac-12 a representative this week, and while the Buffaloes really don't have a bad loss to their name, both of the teams they've beaten are featured in The Bottom 25, and it's just the sheer number of losses piling up that have brought them here. Considering the rest of the schedule, they could be sticking around too.

23. Hawaii 2-5 (NR)

Best Win: 38-28 vs. Wyoming |Worst Loss: 28-14 at Rice

Average Score: 21.0-25.1 | This Week: vs. Nevada

Hawaii has been dropping in and out of The Bottom 25 all season, as it has been pretty consistent in its performances. It loses two games, then wins a game, then loses two games and wins a game. If that trend continues it'll lose to Nevada this week, and then beat Utah State in a couple weeks and drop back out of the rankings.

22. UMass 2-6 (14)

Best Win: 40-17 at Kent State |Worst Loss: 42-41 at Miami (OH)

Average Score: 30.3-34.1 | This Week: at Toledo

Don't look now, but the Minutemen have put together a two-game win streak that's caused them to fall from No. 8 two weeks ago to No. 22 today. And it's really not that big a surprise. While this team was losing exclusively for the first month and a half of the season, it wasn't playing too terribly. Now that it's entered MAC play it's proving to be somewhat feisty.

21. UTSA 2-5 (NR)

Best Win: 27-7 at Houston |Worst Loss: 21-9 vs. New Mexico

Average Score: 20.7-25.4 | This Week: vs. UTEP

The Roadrunners fell out of the rankings last week following a win over FIU, but it jumps right back in after dropping a road game against Louisiana Tech. I still question this team's staying power in the long run, both for the fact it's not really being blown out by anybody, and it has some very winnable games remaining on the schedule.

20. Ball State 2-5 (11)

Best Win: 32-29 at Central Michigan |Worst Loss: 27-20 vs. Indiana State

Average Score: 25.7-27.4 | This Week: vs. Akron

As you can see in that average score stat, the Cardinals have played quite a few close games this season. That hurts its stock here, because even if it just picked up its first win of the season against an FBS school this weekend, that point differential matters in my formula. Ball State is going to need to get blown out at some point if it wants to climb back to where it once was here.

19. New Mexico 2-5 (24)

Best Win: 21-9 at UTSA |Worst Loss: 35-24 vs. Fresno State

Average Score: 25.0-32.4 | This Week: No game

I don't think New Mexico is a terrible team (parity in college football doesn't just affect the Top 25 polls, folks), but while it doesn't have any truly terrible losses on the resume, its only two wins have come against teams featured in The Bottom 25. It does have a bye this week before taking on UNLV, which could be its last realistic shot at a win this year.

18. Kansas 2-5 (23)

Best Win: 24-10 vs. Central Michigan |Worst Loss: 41-3 at Duke

Average Score: 16.6-28.0 | This Week: No game

Kansas has started to show some life the last two weeks, playing both Oklahoma State and Texas Tech tough before ultimately failing at the end. Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, the losses mean more than anything, and they're piling up. Considering the Jayhawks still have to play Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma and Kansas State, they'll likely continue to do so too.

17. Appalachian State 2-5 (7)

Best Win: 53-14 at Troy |Worst Loss: 55-48 vs. Liberty

Average Score: 33.7-31.9 | This Week: No game

So Appalachian State goes from losing at home to Liberty to beating Troy by 39 points on the road. This team is just odd. As you can see, it's averaging more points than it's allowing, but that's because its two victories on the year have come by a combined score of 119-14. It's five losses? Why those have a combined score of 209-96.

16. Wake Forest 2-5 (21)

Best Win: 24-21 vs. Army |Worst Loss: 17-10 at UL-Monroe

Average Score: 14.4-24.9 | This Week: vs. Boston College

Wake Forest is just going to continue to excel in the rankings from here on out. As mediocre as the ACC is outside of Florida State, this team is far and away the worst of the bunch. I have a hard time imagining the Deacons picking up a win in any of their last five games. But, like I said, the ACC is very mediocre. Anything is possible.

15. Tulane 2-5 (19)

Best Win: 12-3 vs. UConn |Worst Loss: 38-31 at Tulsa

Average Score: 18.7-28.1 | This Week: No game

If you read the intro you know that I said the American was the new power conference of the Bottom 25. Yet, here we are, 11 teams in and Tulane is the first team from the American that we've featured. Trust me, it's not going to be the last. The American just doesn't concern itself with life outside the Bottom 15.

14. Army 2-5 (18)

Best Win: 47-39 vs. Buffalo |Worst Loss: 39-17 at Kent State

Average Score: 26.0-35.9 | This Week: No game

Army has this week off, and it probably needs it after being the first team to fall to Kent State this season. That's not easy to do, and the Knights deserve the reward of a weekend at home playing video games. That's what they do in the Army, right? Just hang out?

13. New Mexico State 2-6 (17)

Best Win: 34-31 at Georgia State |Worst Loss: 29-17 at Idaho

Average Score: 24.6-36.3 | This Week: No game

New Mexico State is now on a six-game losing streak, and I have a hard time seeing that streak come to an end before 2015. Yes, the Aggies play in the Sun Belt, but the Aggies have already played the truly bad Sun Belt teams, and it's now lost to both of them. When you lose to both Troy and Idaho in consecutive weeks, you're going to make some moves in these rankings.

12. North Texas 2-5 (16)

Best Win: 43-6 vs. SMU |Worst Loss: 30-20 vs. Southern Miss

Average Score: 30.4-32.0 | This Week: at Rice

North Texas is another one of those teams that doesn't have a horrid loss -- though Southern Miss doesn't look good -- but its wins are against Nicholls State and SMU. Also, while it hasn't lost to a terrible team, when the Mean Green lose, they lose hard. They're like Appalachian State in that they've outscored opponents 120-9 in their two wins, and have been outscored 215-93 in losses.

11. Vanderbilt 2-5 (13)

Best Win: 34-31 vs. UMass |Worst Loss: 37-7 vs. Temple

Average Score: 17.6-34.0 | This Week: at Missouri

Vanderbilt took last week off and moved up two spots thanks to teams above them winning and falling back. Should the Commodores avoid tripping up with a win against Old Dominion in two weeks, they should easily ascend into the Bottom 10 again soon. Oh, and there's the Florida game. I suppose that's another possible win at this point too.

10. Eastern Michigan 2-5 (12)

Best Win: 37-27 vs. Buffalo |Worst Loss: 36-14 at UMass

Average Score: 15.0-39.6 | This Week: vs. Northern Illinois

I was shocked when Eastern Michigan beat Buffalo two weeks ago, but things returned to normal this week with a 22-point loss to UMass. The Eagles could contend for a title here as there's only one game left on the schedule that would be remotely winnable, but I'm guessing the biggest obstacle for the Eagles are those two wins. It could really regret that Buffalo game before we're done here.

9. Kent State 1-6 (3)

Best Win: 39-17 vs. Army |Worst Loss: 40-17 vs. UMass

Average Score: 15.7-32.1 | This Week: at Miami (OH)

The Golden Flashes done went out and won a game last week, and now their title chances are in jeopardy. The good news is they can re-establish themselves this week in THE BOTTOM 25 GAME OF THE CENTURY IN THIS WEEK OF THE YEAR when it plays Miami (OH).

8. UNLV 2-5 (10)

Best Win: 30-27 vs. Fresno State |Worst Loss: 33-10 at San Jose State

Average Score: 18.7-37.0 | This Week: at Utah State

UNLV had the weekend off after knocking off Fresno State two weeks ago. This week should bring another loss, but with both New Mexico and Hawaii remaining on the schedule, we can't take anything for granted with the Rebels.

7. Idaho 1-6 (2)

Best Win: 29-17 vs. New Mexico St. |Worst Loss: 35-30 at Texas State

Average Score: 25.9-36.0 | This Week: No game

Simply put, I jinxed the Vandals last week. I made the intro to The Bottom 25 about the Vandals having the longest losing streak in the country, and then they go out and beat New Mexico State. Sometimes I forget the power my words have, and I apologize to Idaho for putting its Bottom 25 title hopes in jeopardy.

6. Tulsa 1-6 (5)

Best Win: 38-31 vs. Tulane |Worst Loss: 37-34 vs. Texas State

Average Score: 24.4-40.7 | This Week: No game

And now we enter the portion of our rankings where the American's domination truly begins. Sure, Tulsa is only the second team from the AAC we've discussed, but there are still a couple more to come and they're in much more powerful positions.

5. Miami (Ohio) 1-7 (8)

Best Win: 42-41 vs. UMass |Worst Loss: 17-10 vs. Eastern Kentucky

Average Score: 25.0-35.0 | This Week: vs. Kent State

Our defending champion has bounced back nicely from that one-point win against UMass a couple of weeks ago, even if it did play both Akron and Northern Illinois a little tougher than I expected. This week it gets another very big test against Kent State. A win in that one could kill the chances of a repeat.

4. Troy 1-6 (9)

Best Win: 41-24 vs. New Mexico St. |Worst Loss: 38-35 vs. Abilene Christian

Average Score: 19.6-40.7 | This Week: at South Alabama

Troy washed away any fears that the win over New Mexico State had helped it turn the corner by getting blown the hell out by Appalachian State. So now it's right back in the top four, and it's still in title contention. Though it has one huge game remaining on the schedule against our No. 3 team.

3. Georgia State 1-6 (6)

Best Win: 38-37 vs. Abilene Christian |Worst Loss: 34-31 vs. New Mexico St.

Average Score: 27.0-40.0 | This Week: vs. Georgia Southern

Georgia State has quietly gone about its business and put together one hell of an impressive Bottom 25 resume. It's only win on the season is a one-point victory over an FCS team, and it's currently riding a six game losing streak. Not quite a Bottom 25 powerhouse performance, but definitely one that could be good enough come the end of the season.

2. UConn 1-5 (4)

Best Win: 19-16 vs. Stony Brook |Worst Loss: 12-3 at Tulane

Average Score: 12.8-25.7 | This Week: at East Carolina

I don't think you can truly understand how excited I am that UConn has climbed to No. 2. It's not that I have any negative feelings toward the program, nor do I have any money riding on its demise. No, it's the fact that on the last Saturday of the regular season, UConn is scheduled to play...SMU. That's right. We could be looking at a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup to finish the season. WE COULD HAVE OURSELVES A REAL LIFE BOTTOM 25 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

1. SMU 0-6 (1)

Best Win: None |Worst Loss: 43-6 at North Texas

Average Score: 6.5-48.0 | This Week: vs. Memphis

Here I was getting slightly worried about the Mustangs after they managed to put up 24 points against East Carolina. Silly me. The Mustangs went out and showed everyone that they're just fine this weekend, getting steamrolled 41-3 by a Cincinnati team that hadn't allowed less than 24 points to an opponent -- and that opponent was Miami (OH) -- this season.

No Longer Ranked: Texas Tech, FAU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern Miss
