Shangri La becomes fastest growing luxury hotel

It even sounds glam. The Shangri La hotel group has become the world's fastest growing luxury hotel as ranked by consumer interest, the Digital Luxury Group said in a report released recently. Hong Kong based Shangri La is five star luxury resort hotel chain that cut its teeth in Singapore back in 1971. But as the Chinese get richer, luxury hotel awareness — and all important bookings — are on the rise.

China luxury hotel interest rises 39 percent in 2014

Although luxury hotels in China are still feeling the effects of the government's anti-corruption campaign, Chinese consumers' interest in luxury hotels is at an all-time high based on internet search results. The new "World Luxury Index Hotels" report for 2014 by Digital Luxury Group in partnership with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne finds that internet searches for luxury hoteliers surged 39 percent in China this year, making it the fastest-growing region in the world.

Guests at an upscale US hotel can choose to stay in historic train cars that have been transformed into luxury suites and rest on their original tracks. Built within a major rail station, the Crowne Plaza in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, features 13 authentic 1920s Pullman train cars that offer a king or two double-sized beds and all the usual amenities of an ordinary hotel room.

Uptown House, part boutique hotel and part private clubhouse for the swank set, set to open in Harlem, New York

West Harlem, welcome to the club. Uptown House, a Soho House sendup that is equal parts boutique hotel and private clubhouse for the swank set, is slated for arrival in Manhattanville's Factory District in 2016. "Harlem is so ripe for something like this," said Mark Somen, a partner and former managing director of Soho House North America. "Having a beautiful building that is a house or hub for music, arts and culture and literary conversations will be a benefit."

Opening of new boutique hotel Oasis expected

Downtown Project on Oct. 21 unveiled a new 44-room, nongaming boutique hotel named Oasis at its Gold Spike property, creating the first hotel in its development portfolio. The Oasis is the latest project for Downtown Project, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's $350 million initiative to redevelop the East Fremont area in downtown.

A new hotel to be built in Ottawa puts the spotlight on public-private arrangements that are bringing cultural benefits, unique branding and prime downtown locations to mixed-use commercial developments. Groupe Germain Hospitalité, DevMcGill and EBC Inc. will soon break ground on a 23-story complex that includes the expansion of the Ottawa Art Gallery as well as the construction of a 120-room boutique hotel, an 82-unit condominium, a theater, a screening room and four classrooms.

Boutique hotel plan for old council headquarter

The 123-year-old Boclair House in Bearsden, Scotland, formerly used by East Dunbartonshire Council as its educational department headquarters, has been sold and is set to be redeveloped by its new owners. The Tudor Gothic house dates back to 1890 and has a castellated tower and series of porticoed archways, said to resemble Italian cloisters.

Boutique hotel OK'd for Summit Avenue mansion

The St. Paul City Council has approved a developer's plan to redevelop a 98-year-old mansion on Summit Avenue into a boutique luxury hotel. The Pioneer Press reports that the council voted 5-2 to OK John Rupp's plan for the Watson Davidson property at 344 Summit Ave., which most recently was home to the College of Visual Arts.
