Bobcats Become Bowl Eligible After 45-27 Win

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team had a landmark victory, becoming bowl eligible for the second straight year, following a 45-27 victory over Arkansas State, Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos. Robert Lowe had a career-night with 236 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

"Our guys played well in all aspects of the game," head coach Dennis Franchione said. "The defense did a great job tonight to hold that crew. You know they've had five straight over 32 points, four more over 40. So defense did and great job and, oh gosh, Robert Lowe, what a night."

The Bobcats used a strong second quarter to get out to a 28-7 lead. C.J. Best provided a spark, with a 70-yard catch and run, giving the Bobcats a 21-7 lead at the time. It was Tyler Jones' second TD pass of the day after throwing one to Demun Mercer earlier in the game.

Lowe then had his second TD run of the night, going around right end untouched from nine yards out, for the team's third touchdown of the quarter.

Arkansas State would battle back and close the game to within 28-17, but unlike previous games where teams have tried to come back from a large deficit, the Bobcats answered emphatically. After trading field goals with the Red Wolves, the Bobcats got another spark from Lowe, with a 24-yard TD run, around left end to make it 38-20.

"We ran the stretch play a lot," Lowe said. "We made vertical cuts happen, and that's what the stretch play does. It was there all night and we kept calling it."

Lowe's final exclamation mark came with 3:43 to go in the game, with his longest TD run of the night, a 50-yard scamper for the game's final score.

The Bobcats will now have nine days off before the regular season finale on Nov. 29, in Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia State. Fans can hear the game on the Texas State radio network on 105.3 FM in Austin and 89.9 FM in San Marcos, along with 930 AM in San Antonio.
