Dewey Brooks says, "I grew up with this tractor and mom and dad happened to have a camera, there's a lot of pictures of this tractor on the early days on the farm in the 40s and the 50s."

This 75 year old John Deere tractor holds a lot of history from pulling logs on the family farm, to now traveling more than 700 miles from Wisconsin to the Black Hills.

Dewey Brooks says, "I've pushed the old John Deere hard, I don't know who have felt the effects the most, the tractor or me."

Dewey traveled at a steady pace:12 miles per hour, 10 hours per day, completing his route in just under a week.

Dewey Brooks says, "I was in trouble with this because I ran my mouth off in 1993 that I was going to do this. Well, in 1993, I was a lot younger. All through the years the neighbors, family members and relatives have been challenging me and I had to meet that challenge, I'm glad I did."

After the tractor had been worn out in the 60s, it sat as junk in a forest for decades, until Dewey hauled it out of the woods to fulfill what he calls his crazy idea.

"I told my father that since Mount Rushmore and this tractor are the same age, I'm gonna repair it, make it run lord willing, and I'm going to drive it to Mount Rushmore. He looked me in the eye, chuckled and said 'Dewey, you're crazy.' "

Dewey says that the thought occurred to take the tractor to a junkyard, and fortunately that never happened.

He lost one belonging on his way here...

"I stepped off the tractor and a gust of wind, there went my old John Deere hat that I've had for 20, 30 years."

But he gained some friends along the way.

"One gentlemen he was going down highway 9 like I was, and he rolled down his right window and was talking to me all about it going down highway 9, we're both side by side."

It took 23 years, but Dewey finally made his dream come true.

"Going up to Mount Rushmore was beyond awesome."

An awesome and crazy idea, that has touched people all across the country.

Karen Boland says, "It's just really heart-warming, this is what America is about, people like him, his family, the farmers and John Deere is an icon, this is America, this is Americana."
