Syracuse ties Penn State 2-2, despite 42 shots on goal

Despite 42 shots on goal, Syracuse (6-12-9, 4-4-5 College Hockey America) tied Penn State (13-10-4, 7-4-2) 2-2. Melissa Piacentini had 11 shots and a power play goal, making her tied for first in the country with nine on the season.

SU started the game with the first six shots on goal but the Nittany Lions found the back of the net first. Forward Caitlin Reilly scored on an assist from Sarah Nielsen 5:29 into the game. It was Penn State’s first shot of the night.

Each team wasted a power play opportunity before roughing was called on SU’s Piacentini and PSU’s center Hannah Bramm simultaneously. Twenty seconds into the four-on-four, Syracuse forward Alysha Burriss tied the game with her tenth goal of the season.

The remainder of the first and all of the second went scoreless. In the first two periods, the Orange put 22 shots on net, just one fewer than Penn State’s total for the game and overtime.

Less than two minutes into the third, Nittany Lions defender Paige Jahnke was called for interference, setting up Piacentini’s goal, her 14th of the year overall. Down 2-1, Penn State answered a minute later.

Penn State forward Shannon Yoxheimer had her shot blocked by SU goalie Jenn Gilligan, but forward Emily Laurenzi was there to score on the rebound. Despite 11 shots from the Orange in the remaining 16 minutes, the game went to overtime, 2-2.

In the extra period, Penn State won 3-of-5 faceoffs but failed to put a shot on net. Syracuse had five, all of which Penn State goalie Celine Whitlinger stopped.

The tie prevented SU from closing the three-point gap between the Orange and Penn State, which currently sits second in the CHA while SU is third. The teams will face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.
