It’s natural to feel dissatisfied with your body, and this doesn’t apply to just women. Men also feel social pressures and have more body image issues than ever, and many feel that they don’t have the choice to make any changes to their appearance. However, cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly common, and many are now using science and technology to rectify issues with their body and try to look like the best version of themselves.
Although the number of women undergoing cosmetic surgery in Northern California still outpaces men, men are quickly catching up. Every year, more men pay to go under the knife to look slimmer or more youthful, with some surgeries being more common than others. Here are the top five cosmetic surgery procedures popular with men of all ages:
1. Liposuction
Obesity is now a global epidemic with a majority of adults struggling to control their body weight. Liposuction is a procedure that sucks out the most dreaded element of our times: body fat. A single procedure can eliminate close to 15 pounds of body fat from the average obese body. Unlike women, men prefer to have most of the fat sucked out from their abdomen and arms rather than their buttocks and legs.
2. Male Breast Reduction
Male breasts can be tremendously embarrassing. A surprising number of men suffer from overdeveloped breasts and nipples and there’s significant social pressure to get rid of them. Not only is it deemed unsightly, but gynecomastia can also cause emotional and psychological distress. A breast reduction surgery is simply a targeted liposuction at the breast area and a skin tuck to make the chest look flatter and more masculine.
3. Hair transplant
Male pattern baldness is another common issue most men deal with. A combination of hormones and genetic predispositions have made male balding one of the most common physical issues for men, with more than half of all men over the age of 50 suffering from it. A hair transplant is a non-invasive treatment which is becoming increasingly popular.
4. Nose Surgery
Also known as rhinoplasty, nose surgery can have the most dramatic impact on a person’s appearance. This is due to the fact that the size and shape of the nose determines the overall appearance and attractiveness of the face. Hooked, flat, and large noses can all be reshaped with this relatively simple procedure.
5. Botox
Finally, the most common cosmetic treatment for both men and women is Botox. People are now having this aging treatment earlier than ever, sometimes even starting in their 20’s. In a single year, more than 6 million Botox treatments are delivered and a significant proportion of these are delivered to men. The Botox injection treatment for men is sometimes referred to as ‘Brotox’.
Men most commonly struggle with fat, enlarged breasts, misshapen noses, and receding hairlines. Exercise and a well-balanced diet can only go so far, which is why these medical treatments are getting more popular than ever before. Although cosmetic surgery is most often associated with women, the procedures above outline the varying body issues that men have and show that men also have the choice to make changes to their appearance if they so desire.
