How entrepreneurs overcome negative people & succeed

How entrepreneurs overcome negative people & succeed

My favourite television ad right now is the @GoDaddy one in which someone starts their own business. Then Jon Lovitz appears, guffawing and saying "Beans! You'll be living on beans!!!" I love that commercial. It's funny and it sounds familiar, doesn't it?

There's been several projects/businesses I've started that have put me face to face with people (friends, family, peers and other entrepreneurs) who said essentially the same thing. In fact, one person who I respect literally said "Suckerrrr!" less than halfway through my excited description of a new project I had taken on.

True story...

Either everyone automatically assumes my failure...or maybe they assume failure in all people's entrepreneurial endeavors...or maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people.

Either way, success or failure, I'll never stop trying to make my dent in the world (and having fun doing so). Here's a few tricks for staying fired up about your start-up...

Remember the thrill and passion of the moment you started, long after that moment has gone. It is so easy to get an adrenaline rush when you're first launching a start-up or project, but keeping that fire burning can be much harder. The key is to lock in that memory of the rush you felt and the vision you had at launch time. Then refer back to that memory daily, if not hourly.

Embrace your sales forecast. Personally, whenever I need to get motivated or refocused, I pop open my sales forecast spreadsheet. That's where the magic lives. It helps to see what you're working for, and what you could get out of it if you put in the work.

Put in the work. Sometimes work is fun. Sometimes you just have to trudge through it. Putting in the work is the best way to create momentum and radiate success to those around you. It's hard to get started, but easy to feel good about what you accomplished when it's done.

Procrastination is poisonous. There's nothing worse for motivation, momentum or self confidence than procrastinating. Whether you realize it or not, avoiding difficult tasks doesn't save you from them. In fact, the entire time you're NOT doing them, you will be subconsciously worrying about them, adding to stress and eventually either wrecking your business or paralyzing your work ethic.

Be passionate about what you do. If you are passionate enough about your business, it will radiate from you throughout every conversation. Some will be drawn to your positive energy right away and believe in your project as much as you do. Others will need to see you continue to work at it over a longer period of time before they support you. It sucks, but that's just the way it is.

Surround yourself by positive people. You hear this all the time, but here's the thing; this isn't just trending, it's true. Toxic people are everywhere and they can steal your momentum without even knowing they're doing it. In fact, we're all guilty - at some point, nearly every one of us has poisoned someone else's well with our own negativity. Find and embrace relationships with positive people wherever possible. Be one of those positive people wherever possible.

Re-write or re-read your mission and vision statements. Much like writing your own resume, it's a fantastic way to get pumped up about the work ahead of you.
