HUNT VS LAUDA: Grand Prix's Greatest Racing Rivals
The official BBC documentary.
An emotional documentary, which tells the true story of two great drivers and the managers that almost killed them.
This film features unseen footage and exclusive interviews from friends, colleagues and family members of both drivers, as well as the journalists who worked on the Formula 1 circuit at the height of their rivalry in the mid-1970s.
Formula 1 was at its sexiest, most glamorous moment in 1976, a time when it seemed Playboy racers ruled the world. But the reality was very different. The weak were preyed on by the strong. There was no margin for error: if you made a mistake, you died. Grand Prix was mortal combat and the drivers knew it.
Hunt and Lauda were at the mercy of their ferociously ambitious team managers every time they raced. In the mind of Ferrari's Daniele Audetto, and McLaren's Alastair Caldwell, 1976 was to become a legendary battle between Ferrari and McLaren. Both teams craved victory - whatever the cost.
Like gladiators, Hunt and Lauda would be tested to the limit in a season that took on almost Shakespearean proportions as they fought for the chequered flag and control of their lives - circuit after circuit.
The victory duel for the 1976 Formula 1 Championship has become the stuff of legend. The spectacular battle for supremacy that raged between Austrian, Niki Lauda and 'True Brit' James Hunt has never been equalled. After almost burning to death in his car at the Nurburgring track, Lauda came back from the dead and fought Hunt all the way to the last race of the season. The Japanese Grand Prix would prove the greatest moment for one man and the darkest for the other; an extraordinary end to a racing epic that had seen the closest competition ever for a Formula 1 Championship.
This film is no simple tale of driver versus driver: both men had their demons, but the forces that threatened them most were bred from the insane circus that surrounded them.
'A must have true story'

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2014I am old enough to remember the events and thoroughly enjoyed the program.
It not only brings back all the memories of that year but adds wonderful insights from those involved.
Niki's calculating and brave persona complementing the raw talent of the boisterous larger than life Hunt.
Watched in conjunction wit h Duke marketing's " James Hunt " from their Champions series it gives a full humorous and inspiring account.
Enjoy . . . . You Will never see anything like these open, frank comments from today's bland,PR obsessed F1 robots.
Original 1 star was a typo . . Sorry.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2014With so much renewed interest in this battle between two of the racing worlds drivers as Ron Howard's RUSH showed, it's marvellous to hear & see the real footage & hear from the drivers & engineers & very moving firsthand experiences from partners & friends. This documentary is very well edited & a remarkable piece of documentary making about James Hunt & Niki Lauda, it's also an in-depth focus on the teams & cars of that era.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2014When I became a motorsport fan it was not through watching F1 it was watching Rallycross on TV and Demolition Derby's on ITV then I started to watch Formula1 my first recalection was Jackie Stewart 1973 World Championship. But this DVD was true to life James Hunt was not a great driver like Nicki Lauda because in the end Nicki won three F1 Titles so this is good DVD highly recomended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2019first one arrived and it didn't play all the way through..
But I did get another one sent out and that was perfect .. :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2014One of the most amazing battles in history of Formula One. It even showed to me another side of James Hunt compared to movie Rush that more focused on the rivalry between two drivers. this film made me wish James Hunt would be here today with us..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 February 2016This dvd was a revelation to me, It brings to light issues that was not apparent to Joe public at the time.
If you were around at the time of the 1976 Formula1world championship, chances are you wouldn't have known the full details concerning it.
Amazing.
