The Job


The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Sheriff's Record's Clerks who perform a variety of clerical assignments and support functions related to maintaining law enforcement records and handling public inquiries of a sensitive nature.  Duties include operating computers, phones and other office equipment; maintaining and processing files and records; processing money, receipts, fingerprints, and photographs; and assisting the public.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
1) Background:  Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
2) Shift:   Applicants must be available for all shifts; incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings, and may be required to assist after normal duty hours in emergency situations. Therefore, refusal of an assigned shift, location, or relocation may result in removal from the list or termination.  Shift differentials and overtime compensation are available.
 

Minimum Requirements

Experience  (applicants must possess one of the following):

Option A:  One (1) year (full-time equivalent) of office clerical experience, with duties that include public contact, computer usage, phones and filing.

Option B:  One (1) year (full-time equivalent) experience which involved substantial contact working with the public on a daily basis.

Option C:  Two (2) years as a Sheriff's Explorer with a minimum of 192 hours (96 per year) and meet all criteria. Must be 18 years of age at time of application. (Experience must be clearly described and listed in the work experience section of the application.)

  Applicants must be available for all shifts.

Keyboarding/Typing speed:  35 wpm minimum corrected typing speed.

Selection Process

Examination: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the online written assessment.  The assessment will consist of an evaluation of skills and knowledge in the following areas:
  • Proofreading and Data Comparison 
  • Office Procedures and Computer usage
  • Basic Arithmetic and Cashiering
  • Public Contact and Interpersonal Skills
