The Fastest-Growing Temp Jobs In 2015

This article is more than 8 years old.

Temp jobs were once considered a stepping stone for employees looking to rejoin the permanent workforce after a lay-off or other career interruption. But even as the economy has recovered, temp employment has grown, a trend that's likely to continue gaining steam over the next several years.

Temporary roles were among the first to begin seeing a resurgence as the economy began to recover, increasing 15% between 2009 and 2010 and a staggering 57% between 2009 to 2014, according to data released earlier this month by CareerBuilder. Almost 3 million people currently hold temporary positions, a number that's projected to rise 3% this year, and 13% between last year and 2019, an increase that represents 354,877 jobs.

To determine the country's fastest-growing temp jobs, CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. combed through data from more than 90 state and national employment resources. Many of the jobs listed here pay less than $15 per hour, but some offer robust wages as high as around $40 per hour.

“Temporary employment will continue on an upward trajectory as companies look for ways to quickly adapt to market dynamics,” said Eric Gilpin, President of CareerBuilder’s Staffing & Recruiting and Healthcare divisions, in a statement. “Two in five U.S. employers expect to hire temporary or contract workers this year, which opens new doors for workers who want to build relationships with different organizations and explore career options.”

Topping the list of jobs seeing the most growth that pay $15 an our or more is Computer Systems Analyst. These workers "study an organization’s current computer systems and procedures and design information systems solutions to help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively," according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job, which pays a hearty median hourly wage of $39.15, is expected to see 19% growth by 2019.

Other temporary jobs in this field, including Computer User Support Specialist and Software Applications Developer also appear on this list, with projected 14% growth. Accountant and Auditor and Management Analyst roles are expected to see similar gains, as are Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver and Registered Nurse. Machinist, Construction Laborer, and Secretary and Administrative Assistant are all expected to see 13% growth by 2019.

Among jobs that pay a median wage less than $15 per hour, Home Health Aide, which pays $10.15 per hour, is expected to see the greatest growth, 15%. Pharmacy Technician, which has 13% projected growth, pays $14.47 per hour, the most of any of the temp jobs on this list. Gaming Dealer, at $9.22, paid the least.
