Giving people more places to safely walk and bike, and also connecting Lenawee County points of interest, are the goals of a new project and upcoming open house.

Organizers of the “Connecting Lenawee Plan: Non-Motorized Vision for Lenawee County” invite the public to attend Thursday, June 4, at the Lenawee Now office, 5285 W. U.S. 223 in Adrian Township. People can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m.

According to organizers, the Connecting Lenawee Task Force of One Lenawee secured funding from local donors and a Lenawee Health Network grant through the Michigan Department of Community Health, to develop a master plan for nonmotorized transportation in Lenawee County.

“Fulfillment of the Master Plan projects may take perhaps decades,” according to Dave Maxwell, chairman of the Connecting Lenawee Task Force. “But without a plan we lack an agreed vision and, consequently, lose (Michigan Department of Transportation) and other forms of funding and grants to construct trails, stripe highways, add crosswalks and put in signage.”

Local communities will develop more detailed plans of their own, if they choose. Maxwell listed completion of the Kiwanis Trail from Green Highway to Cal Zorn Park in Tecumseh as the top priority so far.

Those unable to attend Thursday are invited to email Maxwell at davemaxwell40@yahoo.com for more information or to comment.

Other presentations Wednesday and Thursday are for local clubs, groups and public officials.
