IN THE NEWS

Stephen Colbert‘s new Late Show on CBS is beginning to look a lot like his old one, at least behind the scenes. The comedian is relying on his Colbert Report production team to run his new venture – among staffers making the move are Tom Purcell, former executive producer and writer at Colbert Report, who will hold the same roles at CBS, and Meredith Bennett, who will be upped to exec producer.

The $20 billion Entertainment Studios Network/ National Association of African-American Owned Media racial discrimination suit against Comcast and Time Warner Cable and Al Sharpton, among others, was reopened on Wednesday. "This is an historic case where federal judge Terry Hatter has an enormous opportunity to tell corporate America that the racism and discrimination must stop and the economic inclusion must begin," Entertainment Studios founder and CEO Byron Allen tells Cynopsis. The suit claims the defendants conspired to discriminate based on race regarding channel carriage. Back in February, Comcast said, "We will defend vigorously against the scurrilous allegations in this complaint."

Cloudy skies? Preliminary discussions have taken place regarding the sale of the Weather Channel, according to Bloomberg Business. The Weather Company, which owns the cabler as well as related web sites, was acquired by NBCUniversal, Bain Capital and Blackstone Group in 2008 for about $3.5 billion.

Chris Harrison, longtime MC of The Bachelor franchise, is returning as host of the 2016 Miss America Competition. The special airs live from Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, September 13 at 9p on ABC. “It is an honor to be back as host of Miss America for the seventh time," said Harrison. “This is a special event that has become near and dear to my heart.”

Another day, another headline for Donald Trump. In Time magazine’s cover story, The Donald suggested that he is such a ratings draw that CNN should pay him to appear at its September 16 presidential debate. Trump proposed a $10 million fee that would be divvied up among charities.

Ricky Martin will make his first-ever appearance at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles on September 10. The Livin La Vida Loca singer will take part in a special onstage conversation and preview of his new series, La Banda, at the Univision Fall TV Previews panel.
