The Information Services Department is recruiting for a Mainframe Systems Programmer who will administer, support, and maintain enterprise level mainframe information systems. The Mainframe Systems Programmer will architect, coordinate, maintain, upgrade, and support enterprise class hardware, software, and network resources; positions require specialized types of expertise in systems administration, programming, performance tuning, upgrading, and recovery operations. The Mainframe Systems Programmer is an enterprise level position supporting critical applications running on zOS used by the County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
1) Must be available to work different shifts. The County pays an hourly differential for those employees working night shifts. 2) May be required to work after hours, weekends, or on call. 

Minimum Requirements

Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed, post high-school coursework from an accredited university or technical school in Computer Information Systems, Business/Public Administration, or a closely related field. A list of coursework must be submitted with the application.

Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, within the last five (5) years, performing systems programming support. Experience must include at least two (2) of the following:
  • Working on s/390 or z/OS.
  • Installation and administration of 3rd party software (e.g., scheduling, report distribution, tape management).
  • Work in 24x7 Production Support environment.
 
Substitution: An additional one (1) year of qualifying experience may substitute up to 15 semester (23 quarter) units of the education requirement. Possession of a Systems Z certificate, may substitute up to six (6) months of the required experience. A legible copy of the Systems Z certificate must be submitted with the application. 

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in computer information systems or a closely related field.
  • Experience installing and configuring 3rd party software such as Computer Associates (ESP, Endeavor & CA-1).
  • Performance tuning such as WLM, Dump analysis, SMF
  • Use of DB2 accelerator and IDAA data loader
  • Backup and recovery using HSM, FDR, or other data protection software.
  • SMS storage management
  • Specialized training and certification in IBM z/Enterprise server (mainframe).
