Do you feel like the road construction will never end? You’re not alone! At any given time, there are as many as 1,000 active work zones in Texas; dozens of these are on interstates and state highways in Dallas – Ft. Worth alone. The more construction zones there are, the more driver and worker safety becomes an issue.

Every day, thousands of construction workers put their lives in the hands of Texas drivers.

Texas tops the nation in road construction deaths. According to TxDOT, there are approximately 15,000 crashes and more than 100 people — both drivers and construction workers — killed in highway construction and maintenance zones every year. Excessive speed, distracted driving and drunk driving are the leading causes of work zone accidents in Texas.

Improving the Texas infrastructure truly is a never-ending project. When one project is completed, another one begins. While it may be frustrating for drivers, it’s important to remember to follow the rules of the road at all times, including while driving in construction zones.

Here are four things to keep in mind next time you enter a construction zone:

Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.

Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.

Be patient. Delays from highway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

Plan ahead. Leave a few minutes early when traveling through a work zone in order to reach your destination on time.
