Why Your Prospects Take So Long To Call Back

As businesspeople, we know that unless someone is using our products and services, it doesn’t matter how good they are. Customers are the lifeblood of business, so we spend a considerable amount of time and effort to court new clients. It’s frustrating when we know we can be of use to potential customers but it takes them forever to get back to us. For many people, the first thought is “What did we do wrong?” or “How can I make them call me?” Most salespeople have had the frustrating experience of having a potential client that they know wants to buy, take a while to call back.

What most of us forget is that we are selling to ourselves. We’re overloaded with communications. Generally, when we have to return phone calls and e-mails, we tend to prioritize them by who we consider to be the most important. Most priority lists are something like this:
  • Emergency Situations
  • Customers
  • Potential Customers
  • Suppliers
  • Personal Calls
  • Salespeole
While we put potential customers higher on the list, we delay calling the people that we are potential customers of. These priorities are unlikely to change, so we have to adapt to ensure we don’t fall off the list. Stay in front of potential customers with newsletters, direct mail, and e-mail, but don’t sell. Once you have made the sales pitch, the majority of your communications should be geared towards showing them how valuable you are to them. More importantly, these communications should not require them to get back to you.

You do need to remind them periodically of your offer, but more importantly, you need to be patient.
