The Job

The County Assessor/Recorder-Clerk is seeking individuals with experience processing Fictitious Business Names and/or Vital Records to apply for Legal Document Classifier I.
 
Legal Document Classifiers I, upon request from the public and other government agencies, retrieves, researches, prepares, and/or provides certified copies of legal documents, Official Records, and Vital Records; assists, directs, and instructs the public in self-service research of Official Records of property ownership, deeds, liens, etc., via microfiche and archives; prepares copies of maps and documents; calculates and collects fees; issues applications for Marriage Licenses and performs civil marriage ceremonies; accepts, reviews, and processes filing applications for Fictitious Business Name Statements, Abandonments, Dissolutions of Partnership, Withdrawals of Partnership, and Proof of Publications.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
Travel: 1) Work locations may vary to meet departmental needs. 2) Incumbents will be required to provide their own transportation, be willing to travel to all locations as needed, and work some evenings, weekends, and holidays. 3) Offices are currently located in Hesperia, Joshua Tree, and San Bernardino. 4) At the time of hire, a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Minimum Requirements

Experience:  One (1) year of clerical experience processing documents in a government, legal, court, real estate, title, or similar office setting.  
 
Substitution:  Two (2) years of completed college coursework or 60 semester (90 quarter) units, preferably in business or public administration, office practices, or related field, may substitute for the required clerical experience.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
  • Review, understand, apply, and explain laws, regulations, and policies governing legal documents.
  • Perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Provide information and respond to questions from the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other staff members.
  • Multitask.
  • Meet departmental production standards.
     
Spanish/English Bilingual Skills are highly desirable and should be noted on the application. Candidates who wish to be considered for bilingual positions must indicate bilingual ability on the application and may be subject to a bilingual screening.

Selection Process

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the written assessment.  The assessment will consist of an evaluation of skills and knowledge in the following areas:
