The Job


The Department of Risk Management is recruiting for Workers' Compensation Adjusters I who, under immediate supervision, receive training and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for all aspects of workers' compensation claims adjusting.  Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:  receive and review workers' compensation claims and reports and determine if occupational illness or injury is compensable; authorize and compute payments utilizing California State Workers' Compensation Law; advise employee and dependents of entitlement to workers' compensation benefits under state law and county policy; develop documentation for claims by reviewing substantiating reports from physicians, supervisors and witnesses; review injury reports for completeness and consistency; resolve discrepancies in data; advise departments regarding procedures and reporting deadlines involving work injuries.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

PromotionWorkers' Compensation Adjusters serve under trainee conditions and are eligible for promotion to Workers' Compensation Adjuster II ($55,598 - $76,440 annual salary) with successful completion of a training program and receipt of a satisfactory work progress report.  Incumbents must promote within 12 months or be terminated. A California Self Insurance Administrator Certificate is required and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required.  Employees will be required to make provision for transportation.  At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: Two (2) years of experience working within a public sector Risk Management Department as a workers' compensation claims assistant or medical only claims adjuster,  which included calculating workers' compensation benefits, scheduling medical appointments, preparing benefit notices, and authorizing payment for medical appointments and procedures.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience within a private sector organization as a workers' compensation claims assistant or medical only claims adjuster,  which included calculating workers' compensation benefits, scheduling medical appointments, preparing benefit notices, and authorizing payment for medical appointments and procedures.

Substitution: Successful completion of courses taken toward the Insurance Education Association certificate (or comparable coursework involving State of California workers' compensation laws) may be substituted at a rate of one class for six (6) months of experience.  Completed college coursework in finance or accounting, medical or paralegal studies, may be substituted at a rate of 12 semester (18 quarter) units for six (6) months of experience.  Classes/coursework may substitute for a maximum of 12 months of the required experience. If substituting coursework for experience, transcripts must be attached or a list of coursework must be included in answer to supplemental question #3.

There will be a competitive evaluation of qualifications based upon a review of the Application and the Supplemental Questionnaire.  You are encouraged to include detailed descriptions of your qualifying experience and skills, as only the most highly qualified applicants will be referred to the Department.
