The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Sarah HoseaFor many of us Christmas includes making travel arrangements, shopping for gifts, and decorating the tree. It's easy to get caught up in all the hustle and bustle, but you can make witnessing this Christmas the highlight of your year!

The holiday season is a great time for outreach. This Christmas, ask the Lord to keep you open to His work and be ready to join Him wherever you see Him working. It may be seed planting, watering or harvest, but either way, you will have the joy of experiencing His presence!

Here are some fishing "lines" that may help you determine the spiritual readiness of your friend. In each case, watch for facial and body language clues that invite further dialogue.

  • Comment on your upcoming plans for celebrating Christmas. Some examples include a church service, a Christmas musical or Christmas dinner.
  • Share an instance where you have seen God's presence in your daily experience such as an answer to prayer, divine help, or protection.
  • Offer to pray for your friend's expressed crisis or need, either with them or later. Follow-up after a few days.
  • Invite your friend to help you with a Christmas benevolence project like Angel Tree, Shoebox ministry, or serving at a Gospel Mission.
  • Just saying "Merry Christmas" rather than "happy holidays" may give you a clue to a contact's openness. Try, "Have a Blessed Christmas!"
