GRAND RAPIDS, MI — "Gangnam Style," the song (and music video) that took 2012 by storm, has added to its spin-offs a parody made by two Grand Rapids hospitals' staffers hoping to nab a $10,000 prize.
Set to South Korean pop star PSY's mega-hit, "Grand Rapids Style" features dancing, lip-syncing emergency medicine residents from Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.
The video was created as part of a contest by Canton, Ohio-based Emergency Medicine Physicians, which invited participating programs to submit videos detailing why they are "the best in emergency medicine."
Programs from across the country submitted videos, making the Grand Rapids parody one of 15 selected for the voting challenge.
In the Grand Rapids video, footage of the residents dancing in various hospital settings rolls while scrolling text lays out their daily tasks.
Submissions that garner 1,000 votes are eligible for the final round. The Grand Rapids video had nearly 350 votes as of Sunday afternoon.
In an email, Dr. Deanna Deschler asked for help in ratcheting up the vote tally. The parody video must receive 1,000 votes by Jan. 31, 2013, to reach the final round.
Per contest rules, the first place entrant will receive $2,500, with their residency program awarded $10,000. Cash prizes drop off for the second and third place winners.
Videos that make it to the final round will be judged based on originality and creativity, overall appeal and "adherence to creative assignment."
