Social Media Intern

Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC, a private meteorological firm based in the Memphis metropolitan area, is seeking a qualified individual for the volunteer position of Social Media Intern for their MemphisWeather.net brand.

MemphisWeather.net (MWN) is a trusted name in Memphis and Mid-South weather. Backed by a full-featured website and 45,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, MWN is the #1 independent source for weather information for the Memphis metro area. Providing routine weather updates every day on social media, MWN shifts to "wall-to-wall" nowcasting coverage during severe weather events.

MemphisWeather.net has a long history of providing opportunities for future meteorologists to develop their skills in a hands-on manner. By combining short-term forecasting with digital communication methods required of today’s graduates, meteorology students are provided the opportunity to gain valuable experience in meteorological interpretation, developing strong communication skills, and customer service that will give them a leg up as they prepare to enter the workforce. In fact, multiple former interns have indicated that their time with MWN provided a key piece of the experience necessary in gaining their first job in the field.

MWN is seeking a dependable, trustworthy, and enthusiastic self-starter to assist in daily operations. Duties include monitoring Memphis-area weather, updating social media feeds (Twitter and Facebook) during both routine and adverse conditions, and depending on skill level, writing blog posts and/or forecasts covering Mid-South weather patterns. Regular hours will be scheduled, but will vary as weather dictates. The ideal candidate is an upper-class undergraduate or graduate level meteorology student with strong writing skills, a basic understanding of synoptic meteorology - particularly of patterns that affect the Mid-South, and a desire to place customer service to followers at the forefront.

This is a volunteer position, but will allow the selected individual(s) to gain hands-on experience from an NWA Digital Sealholder in using social media strategy to effectively communicate important (at times, life-saving) information that will be transferable to other real-world applications. The duties can be adequately fulfilled from outside the Memphis area, though training in the Memphis area may be preferred (scheduled at a time that is convenient). Independent study (internship) course credit can be earned through this opportunity, if desired.
