You see it in the news all the time. Headlines are warning travelers from visiting certain destinations because of high risks. Those risks can be crime, disease, terrorism or something else. However, a lot of these risks aren’t really that likely to impact you.
Unfortunately, one well-documented incident can lead to a destination getting a completely bad rap. This is even if that destination doesn’t deserve it. You may be just as likely to encounter the same dangers in a very common destination like London or Paris.
If you’ve been putting off travel to one of these amazing destinations due to fear, know that you don't have to. They’re all worth a visit.
1. Detroit, United States
Detroit has gotten a bad reputation in travel, thanks mostly to its economic woes. However, just because the city had some bad luck and crime rose doesn’t mean that it should be avoided altogether. The tourism forces at work in Detroit have been publicizing the city’s perks far and wide. It truly seems to be undergoing a renaissance.
Visit and see for yourself the new and up-and-coming neighborhoods filled with innovative eateries, shops and social hubs.
2. Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico in general as an entire country often gets a raised eyebrow or two and that’s especially the case for Mexico City as an urban center. Some may think that the only safe spots in Mexico are the gated, 5-star resorts you’ll find in places like Los Cabos and Cancun, but that’s simply not the case.
Mexico City has a ton to offer and it’s totally safe for travelers, so long as you follow the safe travel practices that you’d want to follow in any destination. Go enjoy the amazing food, wonderful history, jaw-dropping architecture and lovely art.
3. Medellin, Colombia
Similarly to Mexico City, Colombia sometimes receives a bad rap as an entire country, due to its connections with famous drug lords. But Medellin is coming together in new ways that make it a must for any traveler seeking a cultural hub in Latin America.

The city has put effort into cleaning up the tourist areas. Travelers enjoy a renewed infrastructure that makes getting around easy and enjoyable. Don’t miss the city’s food and nightlife scene.
4. Tehran, Iran
Depending on your country of origin, it may be more or less difficult for you to get to Iran. But if you can, Tehran is definitely worth exploring. The average citizen there is hospitable and nice, and the only real bad parts of the city are the pollution and traffic (which, if you’ve visited just about any major city around the world, you should survive just fine).
Enjoy the shopping, the history, the museums, the art and the dining.
5. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio is yet another Latin American city with a reputation for crime. But partially thanks to Rio’s hosting the Olympics several years ago, more people are open to visit it. Yes, you won’t want to take sketchy side streets after dark, but would you do that in New York City either?
Rio offers travelers tons of fun, amazing views and awesome beaches.
6. Moscow, Russia
Regardless of your feelings on Moscow-United States relations and Russian politics, the truth still remains — U.S. travelers shouldn’t feel terrified of visiting Moscow. If given the chance, they should enjoy a visit to the beautiful, historic city.
Moscow offers luxury, culture and art in droves. Like in any wonderful European city, you can feel totally comfortable walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere.
7. Nairobi, Kenya
Some travelers shy away from Africa, unless they’re headed to the continent for a luxury safari. The continent as a whole, though, has been attracting more travelers. Egypt’s tourism is on the rise again following some tumultuous years. Marrakesh is also enjoying a surge in popularity.
Nairobi, though, deserves a second look just as much as these other destinations. You don’t need to book a pricey safari to see Kenya’s beauty. See the culture, try the food and glimpse amazing wildlife.
All it takes to stay safe is some smart precautions. Travel with a friend or companion. Only use transportation you trust.
8. Colombo, Sri Lanka
In Asia, Colombo is often overlooked not only because it has a history of violence but also because not many people know about what all it offers. Colombo is revitalizing itself at a rapid pace thanks to major investments. You can now enjoy a mix of its colonial heritage and newfound urban identity.
With a little research ahead of your trip, you can easily find great luxury hotels to stay at, amazing restaurants to eat at and wonderful attractions to enjoy both night and day.
9. Beirut, Lebanon
The U.S. Department of State has long cautioned U.S. travelers against visits to Beirut. Meanwhile, European travelers have been happily enjoying everything this cosmopolitan city has to offer. Beirut is definitely notable for its vibrant fashion and culinary scenes, as well as a bumping nightlife that any traveler would be remiss to not enjoy at least once.
