Ex-AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi: Mediocre foreign players have hurt national team

Former AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi says Italy will need more than the removal of Giampiero Ventura and Carlo Tavecchio to rescue their football.

After Ventura quit as Italy coach, Tavecchio resigned as president of FIGC yesterday.

But Berlusconi says: "The resignation of Tavecchio and the departure of Ventura were inevitable choices. Football, like so many other things in Italy, is good to start from scratch, but it would be wrong if we made Tavecchio or Ventura the only guilty ones.

"Italian football has been very weak for years and there are so many responsible, it is a mistake to deal with foreigners, clubs should use them to grow Italian players, and not to replace them.

"In my Milan, foreign champions such as Gullit and Van Basten, Rijkaard, Shevchenko, Kaka and Ibrahimovic were always side by side with Italian champions of absolute value: just remember Baresi, Costacurta, Tassotti, Maldini, Inzaghi, Gattuso and many other Italian nationals."
