The Job


The Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Painters I who perform skilled work in painting and finishing a variety of wood, metal and other surfaces including equipment and furniture primarily inside detention centers and correctional facilities.  

Painters I perform the following functions: Strip, prepare and paint walls and other wood and metal surfaces; blend and match paints; perform finish work using stains, paints, varnishes and lacquers; install drywall, tape and mud walls for painting; clean and store tools and materials; erect scaffolding and work from extension ladders. In addition, Painters in the Sheriff's facilities may supervise a small inmate work crew for various jobs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
1) Background:  Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony. 
2) Willingness: Must be willing to work with our inmate population, but would be escorted at all times in secured areas of the facility.
2) Shift:  Applicants must be available for all shifts; Shift and weekend work may be required.
2)Physical: This position requires occasionally lifting of objects up to 50 lbs., in addition to working in confined spaces and squatting, kneeling, stepping and climbing ladders and working on a scaffolding.
3)Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required. Employees in this class may be required to use  county vehicles. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.

Minimum Requirements

Must meet one of the options
 
Option 1: Three (3) years of full-time, paid journey level experience as a painter in the building trades.

- OR -

Option 2: Successful completion of a formal painting apprenticeship program resulting in journey level status. Indicate completion of apprenticeship, including provider and date, on the application and attach a copy of certificate of completion.
