The Special Districts Department, Big Bear Park and Recreation has a rare opportunity to fill a position of  Zoo Keeper. The Zoo Keeper is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations associated with the husbandry of the animals and the maintenance of animal exhibits within a specified animal area in the District's Big Bear Alpine Zoo. Primary responsibilities include the care and feeding of exotic animals, observing and documenting animal behavior, maintaining and cleaning animal enclosures, answering questions from the public, providing daily public presentations, and performing light maintenance in and around animal enclosures.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Availability: Must be able to work in the mountain area of Big Bear, CA and report to work in extreme weather conditions such as ice and snow. Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
Travel: Travel within the County may be required. A valid California Driver License and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Working Conditions: Applicants must be able to work outdoors in varying mountain weather conditions, drive in all weather conditions, lift and/or carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, crawl, and perform other physical activities in the performance of job duties for this position. 
 

Minimum Requirements

Experience: One (1) year of full-time work experience providing terrestrial animal care, enrichment, feeding, exercising, observing/documenting behavior, and cleaning enclosures, in a zoo, animal hospital/clinic, wildlife rehabilitation center or similar facility. Primary experience must include care of a variety of wildlife/exotic animals or sick/injured animals. (Be sure your work history clearly details your responsibilities.)

Note: The following experience is not considered qualifying: Personal, non-work related experience, such as taking care of pets or dog sitting; breeding animals; and working in facilities such as pet boarding or grooming.

Desired Qualifications

Zoo/Animal Keeper training and experience with exotic animals is preferred. Coursework in wildlife rehabilitation/husbandry is highly desirable.
