Driving Data Center Strategy in the World of Big Data and IoT

By CIOReview | Monday, October 10, 2016

Today’s IT industry is dealing with data explosion. Therefore, companies need a data management system to manage the huge amount of generated data. Data center services are already under tremendous expansion mode in terms of storage and computing to accommodate the growing volumes of data and run computation on top of it.

Large data influx in the data centers has brought new changes in the way a data center manages data transactions. Current data centers are more focused on online transaction processing. However, the inclusion of big data changes the whole scenario as it assists data center automation in handling real-time online transactions and processes along with executing batch processes.

The inclusion of big data impacts the way in which databases are stored at the data centers. The quality of big data analytics depends on the characteristic of the stored data. Incomplete, duplicate and inaccurate data impacts working of big data analytics. Therefore, a successful big data analytics project directly improves the productivity of stored data.

Big data also impacts the data retention policy of data center. Every industry has different data retention regulations and to fulfill those regulations, IT teams need to confirm that data is properly saved or archived and easily accessible whenever required. However, the inclusion of big data poses a challenge for systems about data archival and retrieval, and data center demands to be adequately equipped with the resources important for data storage.

Data and computation requirements of the IoT environment is another development within the data center space. IoT assists in building a connection with remote assets and managing the IT stack. Gartner predicted that by 2020, there will be about 26 billion connected devices in the market and IoT will help in managing all digital devices. IoT has a potential to transform the data center market, as its deployment will create a large amount of data that will have to be analyzed and processed in real time. It will increase workloads on the data centers and data center service providers will face new challenges in the form of capacity, security, and analytics. An organization needs to implement more forward-looking capacity management plans for data centers while churning a new technology.

The inclusion of IoT will increase incoming traffic on the data center networks. Currently, WAN links are used in data centers, but after including IoT in the infrastructure, data will come from a multitude of sensors driving the need for more bandwidth. The increasing amount of data will need more storage in the data centers and companies need to focus on using data in a cost effective way. The need for appropriate system management and data center management platforms will increase, as the amount of data and network connections will soar due to IoT inclusion.

Many organizations are confident about using big data in the data center; even though the best practices of IoT are still to materialize. Current data centers are application centric, which powers e-commerce offerings, SaaS applications, and standalone websites, while future data centers will be data centric. The bandwidth of upcoming data centers will be affected because IoT machines and sensors will leverage most of the resources against the user behavior and activity. The inclusion of big data and IoT demands expansion of infrastructure capacity and storage capacity to handle information generated from both technologies. Therefore, CIO’s role is to select a ’numero uno’ data center business strategy, which fulfills current operational needs and provides the capability to handle future growth opportunities.
