5 Little Known Health Benefits of following a Non-GMO Diet

Despite the huge technological advances we have had within the past few decades, we seem to be lagging behind in terms of nutrition and general health. We have become weaker and more prone to diseases, and it is partly due to the lifestyle factors. Being sedentary, combined with eating micro nutrient deprived junk food and genetically modified crops, and being over reliant on antibiotics, has all led to an obesity epidemic, increase in food allergies, and more resistant virus strains. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available to those who want to switch to a healthier diet, and there are some interesting benefits to an organic and non-GMO diet that a lot of people may not be aware of.

1. It Helps You Keep Allergies under Control

There has been a big surge in food allergies in recent years, particularly to GM soy and corn, and a lot more people seem to be reacting negatively to the common foods that we have been consuming for years. With organic and non-GMO foods, you have less of a chance for developing allergic reactions, as there are far less allergens in them, while GMO’s can have new allergens that aren’t naturally occurring in wild plant species – even some people who didn’t have an allergic reaction to natural soy had a reaction to GM soy.

2. It Allows Your Body to Deal More Effectively with Skin Parasites

There are very few things that can be as irritating and disruptive to a person’s life as itchy rashes and skin inflammation that simply won’t go away. Skin parasites are quite a common problem, and can often be difficult or nearly impossible to diagnose. Some of the common effective treatments focus on eating healthier foods, which involves switching to a non-GMO diet and eliminating some foods altogether. In short, if you are suffering from persistent skin parasites, changing your eating habits and avoiding GMO food can help greatly reduce the symptoms, and allow you to live a normal life.

3. It Prevents Common Micronutrient Deficiencies That Plague the Modern World

The focus of modern corporations is to make the most money possible, while investing the smallest amount possible – that’s just how business works. However, this leaves a lot of room for sacrificing quality in order to make a better profit, which has led to most of the food in the produce section being bred to be more resistant to pests and pesticides and ripen quickly, while nutrition and taste take a backseat. Non-GMO organic fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, are rich in nutrients and taste great, but they yield less crop overall.

4. It Strengthens Your Immune System

This point goes hand in hand with micronutrient deficiencies – not only does a lack of certain nutrients negatively affect different aspects of your health, but having a good balance of all the essential nutrients can actually help stave off disease. GMO corn has also been shown to cause immune system problems in mice, so by going for non-GMO foods, you ensure both a large dose of essential micronutrients and avoid potential immune system problems that can come from eating genetically modified food.

5. It Improves Your Overall Fitness, Especially Recovery

GMO crops can withstand huge amounts of pesticides, which means there will be some residual amounts of certain toxins, like the Bt-toxin, which can cause allergic reactions. Combine this with potential immune system problems and less nutrients, and you will have trouble keeping your body strong and healthy even if you have several servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Organic non-GMO crops have been found to contain 60% more antioxidants than their GMO counterparts. Antioxidants help heal the body’s cells and greatly aid in recovery after grueling exercise. So, avoiding genetically modified food can actually improve your overall fitness levels and help you recover faster.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not fond of conspiracy theories or clichés about “evil corporations”, but it is a simple fact that entrepreneurs are out to make money, and history has shown us that companies are not bellow shelling out products that carry certain health risks to the consumer. Modern GMO crops are made to benefit the producer’s wallets, not the consumer. Switching to a non-GMO diet has several great health benefits that shouldn’t be ignored, and the only downside is that you have to put in a little extra effort to avoid the wrong foods.
