EXCLUSIVE: Peter Reid lifts the lid on Sunderland link: They haven't offered me the job

Peter Reid says his former club Sunderland haven't contacted him about the vacant managerial post.

But the former Everton midfielder refused to categorically rule out a return to Wearside and insists the club must make a decision as soon as possible.

After just one win in his first 15 matches, the Black Cats fired Simon Grayson after their 3-3 draw with Bolton at the end of October.

A number of former players have backed Reid, 61, to take over the club he managed from 1995 to 2002. Sunderland have in the past hired people closely associated with the club in times of crisis and many believe Reid fits that mould.

However, Reid insists Martin Bain and Co. haven't got in touch about a possible return.

Asked exclusively by Tribalfootball if he was interested in the job, Reid said: "Listen, you're only interested if you've got offered it. I haven't been offered it yet so it's a waste of time talking about it."

He added: "What I would say is it's a fantastic football club who are going through difficult times, and the most important thing for them is to get a manager in quick and get them winning football matches because as big a club as Sunderland is, with great facilities and the Stadium of Light, they can still go down to League One, and for a club like Sunderland that would be an absolute disaster."

Reid has been without a club since he left Indian Super League club Mumbai City in 2014.

He has also managed Manchester City, Leeds United and Coventry City during his career.
